Today carbon fiber trim has become common place in modern super cars and even domestic muscle and sports cars like the Shelby Mustang and the Chevy Corvette. However, back in the 1960s and through the early 1980s carbon fiber was more of an exotic material generally used in aerospace and in race car construction. The 1960s meant chrome or stainless trim, and lots of it. While there’s no denying the classic looks of a first gen Camaro or other ’60s muscle car replete with stainless trim, chrome bumpers, and more, for those building aggressive Pro Touring-type rides today most of that brightwork has been replaced with body color, blacked out, or aftermarket fiberglass or carbon fiber components.

The same can be said for the interior of these same cars. Flat, low back buckets (or bench seating) have given way to lightweight performance or racing seats. Chrome/stainless trim is now replaced with carbon fiber or other modern materials, woodgrain gauge clusters updated with aluminum or carbon fiber panels fitted with modern electric gauges. This is all happening in the name of performance, weight reduction, and modern stylization. A popular interior upgrade for the first generation Camaro has been updating the rather mundane OE door sill plate to something more in line with these Pro Touring styling touches. A lot of carbon fiber products out there for our favorite muscle cars have varying levels of carbon fiber material in their construction (and some are simply a carbon fiber graphic laid over plastic!). Because carbon fiber starts out as a woven material that is “laid up” like fiberglass it will often be layered with fiberglass, like in some carbon fiber helmet construction methods. Others will create an ABS plastic part via injection mold and then lay the carbon fiber over it. While these methods all create a carbon fiber look part, if you’re looking for the true benefits of carbon fiber materials, mainly superior strength with low weight, then 100 percent carbon fiber mat is what you want and that is what we use exclusively.
