A Direct-Fit Ford 9-inch Rear End Housing for Your Second Gen A-Body

There is certainly no denying the popularity of Ford’s venerable 9-inch rear axle when it comes to high performance street and racing applications. It is probably a safe bet there are more non-Ford vehicles on the road (and track) with a Ford 9-inch rear end under them than Ford ever shipped off their assembly lines! That is saying a lot right there. From the stronger housing design to the huge aftermarket support in axles, differentials, ring and pinion gears, and more, the Ford 9-inch rear end is the performance axle housing to use, without a doubt.

For those building up a 1968-72 GM A-Body car (Chevelle, GTO, Malibu, Tempest, Cutlass, 442, etc.), Speedway Motors offers a bolt-in 9-inch Ford rear end housing for your build that is a direct swap for stock second gen A-Body rear ends. This A-Body rear end housing is made from premium steel and is fully welded, including brand new “Torino” big Ford axle housing. The housing maintains the 2nd gen Chevelle rear end width and retains the stock shock mount locations as well. The axle’s control arm mounting brackets are welded in their stock mounting location for a bolt in solution. This allows you to retain stock ride height characteristics or you can lower the rear of your A-Body via lowering springs, or other options.

Includes Fully Assembled Axles Ready for Your Differential and Center Section

Our 2nd gen Chevelle 9-inch rear end housing package includes strong 31-spline performance axles with bearings and bearing lock rings already pressed into place on the axles. The axles feature dual Chevy/Ford bolt pattern of 5 on 4-3/4 and of 5 on 4-1/2 with 1/2-20 press-in threaded studs preinstalled in the 5 on 4-3/4 GM pattern. Finally, we include the axle retainer brackets and the correct 9-inch T-bolts and nuts to secure the axles and your drum or disc brake kit of choice.

Additional hardware includes 10 press-in studs with nylon locking nuts for the main A-Body 9-inch housing to center section assembly, and a screw in axle vent fitting. All your new Ford 9-inch housing needs for completion is a complete center section with your choice of differential and gearing and drum or disc brake package. Our complete 9-inch 3rd members are the perfect choice to finish your first gen A-body rear end build. Replace your tired 1968-1972 Chevelle rear end with our Ford 9-inch rear end in your first gen Chevelle, Malibu, Tempest, or GTO while maintaining the stock rear end width and upgrade to the strength and vast options the Ford 9-inch offers.

Overall Assessment

Customers praise the product for being a reliable, high-quality upgrade for GM A-Body vehicles. The installation process is straightforward with pre-installed bearings on axles, making it a practical choice. However, take note that the lug stud size varies, and a steel third member housing is recommended to avoid leaks. The product pairs well with a Speedway 9" Disc Brake upgrade kit, UMI adjustable control arms, and a sway bar, significantly improving handling. Some users felt that the package could be improved, but overall, customers appreciate the product for being a good value and well-built choice for their assembly.

I used this rearend housing on my '70 Chevelle. It was a perfect upgrade to go behind my LS3 swap. The housing was a direct bolt in. I had no issues at all with the install into my Chevelle. I did have to grind down a little material on the inside so my third member would fit properly onto the housing. The bearings are already installed onto the axles which was nice. The lug stud is a different size on these axles from the factory GM size. If I remember correctly they were 1/2"-20. Just something to think about when doing the swap. The packaging was somewhat lacking on this housing though. It was just wrapped in shrink wrap lightly and the housing pumpkin was a little scratched when I got it. It does cost about $175 to have it powder coated after it is completely degreased. I would recommend a steel third member housing with this one as my aluminum housing was a little "leaky". This housing goes great with the Speedway 9" Disc Brake upgrade kit. Do yourself a favor and buy the longer stainless steel brake line. Not the one that they sell in the complete kit. I paired this setup up with the UMI adjustable control arms and sway bar. It is a huge difference in handling!

Great product but nowhere online does it mention T-Bolts that are not included. This is a conversion for GM A-Body, customers do not know what T-Bolts are (the standard GM bolts will not work and they are not available locally) and they should be either included or at least mentioned in the product description. I got my rear end and had to wait another week for T-Bolts. So yes if you are following Project Chevelle and ordering parts don't forget the T-Bolts!

This will be for a 9 inch conversion in a 1969 El Camino. All the parts were included for axle installation and 3rd member. The housing has nice welds. I will use a speedway 3rd member and a disc brake package also from speedway in the installation. The car currently has a big block with a five speed coupled to a non posi GM differential so there is a lot of wheel spin making it difficult to judge the power. Looking forward to see what it's like with the new differential!
