While it is common for new cars to have 7-speed or greater transmission offerings (even Ford and GM share a 10-speed auto!) the majority of manual trans swaps happening in the muscle car and hot rod arena are still the ever popular 5-speed. This is mainly due to cost and fitment, with a lot of applications having complete swap kits available for the popular Tremec line of 5-speed manual transmissions. These kits work great if your build falls within the kit’s design parameters. But as soon as you make a change (and us hot rodders love to make changes) you’re on your own to figure out transmission crossmember location, where the shifter hole needs to be in the floor, and more.
