Adding Twin Turbos to Your Small Block Chevy Made Easier with Our Turbo Kit
You may think that the LS engine gets all the love when it comes to building a turbocharged ride, but the small block Chevy has seen more than its fair share of turbo setups for both street and track use. From the earliest days of drag racing to the Pro Touring and Restomod movements on the street, turbocharging a small block Chevy has been a popular, if not often complicated, route to making horsepower. It was not uncommon to have to use turbos from truck or marine applications and fitted with specially calibrated blow through carburetor setups making installation and tuning frustrating for all but the most hardcore turbo enthusiasts.
Today, things have changed, making adding a turbo (or two!) to your small block Chevy much easier and with less frustration thanks to Chevy twin turbo kits such as the one we’ve created. High quality brand new turbochargers designed for great power potential (and not designed for a diesel truck) are just one of the many key ingredients that makes turbocharging a small block Chevy so much easier these days. Add in modern aftermarket EFI and the ability to custom tune fuel, timing, and more via boost and you could make a high horsepower SBC turbo built with amazing street manners that can be driven every day if you wanted to. Just remember, any speeding tickets are your responsibility, not ours!
Two 66mm T4 Turbos Ready to Bolt onto Your Small Block Chevy
Our SBC twin turbo kit is based around a pair of our 66mm T4 turbochargers. These turbos feature a 66/62 configuration of a 62 mm compressor inducer and 66 mm turbine exducer. The T4 exhaust housing utilizes a .70 A/R ratio and includes a 3-inch V-band clamp exhaust outlet, providing an easy exhaust system build out using the included 3-inch piping and V-band clamps. The cast aluminum compressor wheel is rated for up to 800 flywheel horsepower, which means you can create a boosted SBC capable of some major horsepower at lower and safer boost levels thanks to the boost coming from two turbos versus a single unit. Universal in design to allow remote installation under the hood of any SBC powered vehicle, these turbos use a journal bearing center housing with 7/16-24 oil feed and GT35 oil drain flange, providing a vast selection of oil feed and drain line options for your SBC turbo build.
Hot Side Exhaust Components to Build the Perfect Twin Turbo SBC Setup
Adding twin turbos to your small block Chevy starts with the build up of your hot side components and our kit provides most of everything you need to accomplish this task. Starting with a set of 1-3/4-inch primary tube turbo headers that can be mounted in a forward and down or forward and up configuration for your build. A pair of concentric adapters are provided to convert the header collectors into a 3-inch diameter outlet, allowing you to build your hot side plumbing via the included pair of 180-degree and 45-degree 3-inch stainless exhaust bends. We also provide a pair of 3-inch V-band to T3/T4 elbows for remote mounting of the included turbos vs direct mount on the end of the headers. Using these elbows along with the 3-inch stainless bends and V-band clamps allows multiple mounting options and the ability to clock the elbows for the perfect Chevy 350 turbo kit placement. Finally, a pair of 44mm wastegates are provided in our hot side components to control boost pressures with pre-installed 8lb and 5lb springs for a total of 13 psi of boost control right out of the gate. These wastegates can be controlled via boost pressure/springs or electronically with aftermarket boost controllers.
Cold Side Plumbing to Feed Your Engine All the Boost It Can Take
Our turbos feature a 4-inch compressor housing inlet. Often builders will direct mount their air filters to the compressor inlet, but we provide ample sections of 4-inch aluminum tubing, black PVC couplers, and stainless steel clamps to allow remote mounting of the included 6.7-inch long conical air filter assemblies that use pre-oiled non-woven synthetic filter media. This allows the builder to place the filters where it best suits the installation, including un-used headlight openings, through the inner fender apron, or other areas to best source cool air outside the engine compartment.
Included in our cold side plumbing is your choice of a 2.5-inch or 3-inch tubing kit (both available in either polished or black tubing) to route the compressor housing’s 2.5-inch outlet through an intercooler (not included). While not provided, one option that may work for your installation is to up the compressor outlets to 3-inch via a pair of coupler adapters and a single aluminum 3-inch Y-pipe, then select the 3-inch tubing kit option for your plumbing needs. Lastly, our 50mm blow-off valve is included for your cold side building needs to vent boost pressure, preventing compressor surge damage.
While we’ve put together an incredibly comprehensive SBC turbo kit here, obviously there are too many variables as to just what the customer is building and additional components, including turbo oil feed and drain fittings, engine oil return adapters, intercoolers, fabrication of mounting brackets, and more will be required. The hot side of the system will require welding and fabrication skills and an understanding of twin turbo SBC system design, wastegate and blow-off valve placement and tuning will be necessary as well. Our small block Chevy turbo kit provides an outstanding starting point for your twin turbo SBC dream build to come to fruition, taking much of the guesswork out of building a Chevy small block twin turbo kit from scratch.
