Stainless Steel Brake Fittings Provide Superior Corrosion Protection
Plumbing a complete custom brake system is common when building a hot rod or muscle car with aftermarket disc brake conversions or when converting from the original single reservoir master cylinder to safer dual reservoir master cylinder used in “split” braking systems. Brake lines and brake line connectors are offered in several different materials, with the most common being galvanized steel. However, this galvanizing is simply a coating and can be scratched off or worn with time. Stainless steel brake lines and brake line connectors offer superior protection from the elements, as the stainless steel has a natural corrosion resistance with no coating that can be compromised.
The typical stainless brake lines use a 37-degree AN flare fitting, meaning it is not compatible with the standard SAE 45-degree flare fitting used in other, more traditional brake lines, brake line connectors, and components like brake calipers and master cylinders. To connect these components to a 37-degree AN brake line system it is common to use a 7/16-20 IFM (inverted flare-male) brake line adapter that would thread directly into your disc brake caliper or master cylinder fluid line port. These brake line connectors feature the standard AN -3 male fitting on the opposite end to connect flexible AN -3 stainless steel brake hoses (at the caliper) or AN -3 hard lines (at the master cylinder). Standard fittings are zinc plated, and much like the galvanizing process, the zinc plating can be compromised, inducing corrosion into the fitting. Our stainless steel brake line AN fittings are just as corrosion resistant as regular stainless brake lines, making them the perfect addition to your custom brake system.
