What Does C-Notching your Square Body Truck’s Frame Accomplish?
There’s no denying that a lowered truck turns heads. Everyone loves the dropped in the weeds look of a classic pickup truck. Up front, the IFS makes things easy, but out back that live axle tends to get too close for comfort with the frame rails when you drop the back end anything more than two inches, and for many of us two inches isn’t enough. We want that “laying frame” appearance that only a 4- to 6-inch drop out back can accomplish. To be able to lower a live axle pickup that much in the rear properly means performing a C-notch to the frame. A C-notched frame essentially means the frame is notched for axle clearance and then a C-notch kit is added to reinforce the frame where the notch has been cut out.
In the past C-notching a frame usually meant cutting the C-notch into the frame rails and then welding steel pates over the cutout area in a tedious and time-consuming operation of cutting plate steel to fit and then welding the C-notch pieces into place. While functional, it wasn’t an easy install, especially if you didn’t have a good welder and the welding skills to go with it. As the popularity of performing a truck C-notch for axle clearance grew, so did the availability of pre-welded C-notch kits. Often these C-notch kits were a step-notch design, protruding into the bed floor and still required welding for installation. Today, the popular underbed truck C-notch is the answer for most applications, requiring a lot less fabrication while keeping the truck’s bed floor intact. Our LevelSet™ C10 C-notch kit provides ample axle clearance on lowered Square Body trucks and is easy to install thanks to its bolt-in design.
A True Underbed Bolt-In C-Notch Kit That Fits Under Your Truck’s Bed Floor
Nobody wants to hack up a perfectly good short bed truck box in the name of lowering appearance and better handling. With our bolt-in truck C-notch kit you get all the benefits of a C-notched frame for more axle clearance on your lowered ride without having to cut into your Square Body’s bed floor. You don’t even need to remove your bed for installation either! This not only reduces installation time and labor, but you can breathe easy knowing you don’t have to mess with bed alignment or worry about your nice paint either. Simply remove your wheels and tires for access and be sure you have plenty of lighting to see what you’re doing under your truck!
Heavy-Duty 1/4-inch Steel Plate Construction C-Notch Reinforces Your Frame
Cutting a big notch into your Square Body C10 pickup’s frame for a C-notch kit can be an uneasy feeling. You’re taking a decent chunk of metal out for clearance to make room for your rear axle’s upward motion and not leaving much of the original frame in that area. Our bolt-in C-notch kit makes C-notching a frame not only an easy DIY project you can handle in your home garage, but our C10 C-notch kit is made from 1/4-inch thick A36 steel plate, ensuring your frame’s structural integrity is properly restored. These heavy-duty truck C-notch plates are the perfect solution for those looking to perform the typical 2/4 or 4/6 suspension drop on their Square Body C10.
Available in raw steel to paint or powder coat to match your frame’s custom details, or in standard black powder coat, they bolt to your C10’s frame rails using the included 7/16-20 bolts, hardened washers, and lock nuts. A pair of our G-Comp bump stops are included, but if you’re really getting low, you may wish to swap them out for a pair of ultra-low bump stops for additional axle clearance.
Make your truck C-notch project go smoothly by using our 73-87 Square Body C10 C-notch kit. Everything is included for a stress-free DIY installation, plus our detailed instructions will guide you through the whole process with complete measurements and cutting guide. Don’t fear C-notching a frame, it’s an easy project to tackle with our C-notch kit for your 73-87 C10 or GMC C15 2WD pickup.
