Eliminate the Gen 4 LS’s Variable Valve Timing to Make Way for Aftermarket Cams

There is no denying that modern technology helps engines be more efficient and provide more horsepower and torque, while achieving tougher and tougher emissions standards. We think we can all appreciate that for our daily drivers that see tens of thousands of miles every year hauling the kids around, grocery shopping, and all those other errands we try to cram into our busy weekends. However, when one comes across a screaming deal on one of these modern engines to swap into our project cars, we like to keep things simple by eliminating much of this technology. Not only does it make the swap go more smoothly, but it also keeps costs down, and frankly, most of these projects see minimal miles each year, so their carbon footprint is negligible.

The LS engine family has been the swap king for decades. However, GM didn’t do LS swap enthusiasts any favors when they updated their LS engine line to the Gen IV platform. The Gen IV LS was released in 2005 and updated with variable valve timing (VVT) and active fuel management (AFM) that most enthusiasts refer to as displacement on demand (DOD). The DOD feature disables four cylinders at cruising speed to aid in fuel economy. While this LS variable cam timing and the active fuel management updates are technological marvels, these Gen 4 LS features become an issue when LS swap enthusiasts consider larger camshafts. And since a simple cam swap in an LS puts so much more power to the ground, when swapping in a Gen IV LS it is pretty much a given that the LS variable cam timing needs to go away. Thanks to our VVT delete kits you now have an easy and complete kit to install that hot LS camshaft in your Gen IV LS swap.

All Inclusive Kit Features Everything You Need to Convert Your Gen IV LS

Since the VVT cam phaser actuator is mounted to the inside of the timing cover and interfaces with the Gen IV LS cam gear, eliminating the VVT system requires changing out the phaser-specific timing chain cover for a standard LS timing cover as used on the Gen 3 LS. Our kit includes our two-piece polished timing cover for your VVT delete needs. Also included is a high quality Fel-Pro gasket set to install the new timing cover. Since the crankshaft damper requires removal to access the timing cover and the factory damper bolt is a torque-to-yield one-time use fastener we have also included a new damper bolt in our kit as well to prevent having to hunt one down locally or purchase separately. Lastly, our kits include the appropriate camshaft gear and camshaft gear bolts to get that spicy new camshaft installed without any issues.

We have put together three kits in total, all feature the same timing cover, gasket set, and damper bolt. Where the kits differ is in the cam gear style and whether you need one bolt or three bolts to retain the cam gear to the camshaft. We offer a VVT delete kit with 3-bolt camshaft and 1X cam sensor (24X crank sensor) for the early 2005-2006 Gen 4 LS, and two kits for 2007-2015 Gen 4 LS with the 4X cam sensor (58X crank sensor); one for 3-bolt cams and one for 1-bolt cams. We did this because we know that aftermarket camshafts are made in both single bolt and three-bolt varieties and this way our VVT delete kit offerings will not limit you to a specific cam bolt setup. With our VVT delete kit and your choice of aftermarket cam your cam timing will now be locked to your valve timing and some tuning may be required, especially if you are using an OEM computer.
