Safety should be every racer’s top priority. No matter if you’re a circle track racer, drag racer, road racer, or just a weekend auto cross junkie, safety should be paramount. If you’re racing a production car built after the late 1960s you may be utilizing the OEM collapsible steering column there already. However, if you’re looking to save some weight or building a purpose built chassis, an aftermarket race car steering column with collapsible steering shaft is a must. Yes, you’re strapped in with a safety harness but obviously there can be situations where there is enough chassis deformation that the steering column may attempt to impact your body. Having a racing steering column with collapsible shaft provides additional safety in these situations.

Installing a collapsible steering column in a race car isn’t difficult. You can use either a weld-on steering bracket, which is common for production cars and some tube frame race car applications, or you can use a bolt-on race car steering column bracket designed for tubular race car chassis. Our race car steering column is adjustable from 22.50-inches to 32-inches in total length (not including the quick release designed for standard three-bolt steering wheels) to fit a variety of chassis and steering system designs. Remember, to have some collapsibility you’ll not want to bottom out the column at its shortest dimension. Also included is an aluminum heim mount that can be set anywhere along the column’s length using the included locking collars.

The output of the column features a 3/4-20 spline output shaft. This output can be connected to a steering box or rack-and-pinion steering unit with your choice of applicable steering shaft U-joint. If your steering system needs further support an additional steering support heim can be used as well, especially if you are using multiple lengths of steering shaft material and joints to connect your drag race steering column to your steering gear box or rack.
