The first mechanic creeper saw service in the early 20th century. Its design made use of wood sheets or planks with solid steel wheels. It was a crude device, but it was an economical and safer alternative to adding a pit to a shop or garage floor for mechanics to stand in and perform undercar work. This under car creeper design was heavy and the solid metal wheels often prevented smooth movement, but like any invention, improvements over time made it a better product. Soon a garage creeper could be found made from tubular steel with urethane wheels and a padded wooden base.
