Make Your Swap Easy with Our Adjustable Width and Depth Universal Transmission Crossmember
We’d hazard a guess that the minute the first salvage yard opened some enterprising hot rodder grabbed a more powerful engine and transmission for their ride, and thus the engine swap was born. However, it happened in history, today, engine swaps are huge with complete aftermarket support for the most popular swaps like an LS in a C10 pickup, or a Coyote in a vintage Mustang. But what if your swap plans don’t include a popular engine/trans combo, or perhaps you’re building something a little offbeat, like a Studebaker or a Henry J perhaps? In these instances, you’re not very likely to come across any sort of aftermarket swap kit and will be left up to your own devices to fabricate engine and transmission mounts to get your project moving forward.
Engine mounts are relatively easy, as there are numerous “hot rod” engine mount offerings that use standard mounts with adapters or custom urethane mounts that are welded to the front frame rails or crossmember to get the job done. Now at the opposite end of the of the puzzle is the transmission tailshaft and properly supporting that mid-ship in your frame or unibody chassis. This is a bit of a tougher problem to figure out, however. You must properly support the rear of your transmission, obtain the proper driveline angle to minimize vibrations and clear the floor and exhaust system. While some will start with a junkyard transmission crossmember and cut/grind/weld on it to make it work, it’s often never quite right and certainly not the nicest looking piece when finished. Our TorqLink™ universal transmission crossmember aims to make the mounting of the transmission part of your swap as simple as possible with adjustable width and mount pad height options.
Adjustable Sliding End Mounts Fit Frame Rails From 29.5 Inches to 45.1 Inches in Width
It isn’t easy to make a “one size fits all” solution when it comes to an adjustable transmission crossmember, which is why we created four different versions to accommodate various frame rail width and center drop needs. Offered in a “narrow” and “wide” version, both in two inch and four inch drop centers, means there is going to be a TorqLink™ universal transmission crossmember kit that will fit your application needs. Our narrow crossmembers fit widths of 29.5 inches to 37.6 inches (two inch drop center) or 31 inches to 39.1 inches (four inch drop center) with an infinitely adjustable slot arrangement on both ends, which also provides for various drivetrain offsets. You have the option of direct bolt in installation, providing the narrowest crossmember width, or you can utilize the included two bolt quick detach brackets, which increases the minimum width by 2.9 inches. The transmission mounting pad surface is adjustable as well, providing the ability to raise or lower the mounting surface by a half inch either way (1.5-2.5 inches on our two inch drop model, 3.5-4.5 inches on our four inch drop model).
If you need to span a wider frame rail dimension our wide torqLink™ crossmembers offer additional adjustment width, starting at 35.5 inches to 43.6 inches (two inch drop center) and going up to 37 inches to 45.1 inches (four inch drop center). The wide crossmember offers the same two bolt quick detach bracket feature as well as the same adjustable mounting pad surface. The mounting pad surface on all four models is designed to work with the popular and common two bolt transmission mount that uses a 1-1/2-inch mounting hole/stud pattern and is slotted for adjustment. GM rear wheel drive transmissions, including Powerglide, Turbo 350/400, 4L-series of four-speed automatic overdrives, T10 4-speed, TKO/TKX and other Tremec manual transmissions use this mount spacing. For Ford or Mopar transmission applications you will need to fabricate a mount adapter (to use a GM mount or for the Ford/Mopar mount to mate to the crossmember) to use with this crossmember.

We start with 10-gauge sheets of premium steel plate and then precisely cut and bend the crossmember structure that is then jig welded for a perfect, bind free fit to make adjustments easy when you’re mocking things up. Our strong, flex-free adjustable transmission crossmember is powder coated black for clean aesthetics and a long life in the elements. Finally, we include high-grade 3/8-inch zinc plated hardware for assembly and installation of our transmission crossmember kit, though you have the option of welding the quick detach brackets or the adjustable end brackets directly to your frame if you so wish.

I used this cross member to install a t-5 behind a 235 in a 1937 Chevy 2 door sedan and it worked great. I welded the mounting brackets to the frame and can still drop the cross member with 2 bolts. It was a tight fit and if ithe cross member had been any wider it would not have fit without modifications. But this saved me the headache of having to fabricate one and the price was right. I highly recommend this cross member.
