A Modern Chassis for Classic Trucks
Remember when ’67-’72 Chevy trucks were just the utilitarian workhorses that your dad drove to work every day and hauled dirt and sheets of plywood around in on the weekends? Well times have changed, and folks have realized that in addition to being rugged and reliable, these trucks are pretty darn good looking. And they often look even better when they’re lowered over an upgraded suspension.
Problem is, those years of hard work were often unkind to the stock chassis and suspension underneath that shapely sheet metal. The last ’72 C10 rolled off the line more than five decades ago. That’s a lot of years for rust to grow, accidents to happen, or for just a few too many cinder blocks to get loaded up at the lumberyard. We’ve looked at some of these trucks that would make great projects if it weren’t for a twisted up, cracked, or rusty frame.
That’s where this ’67-’72 C10 Truck Frame Assembly comes in. These are custom chassis that match the shape of the original frame, but have a ton of upgrades that make them the perfect base for a lowered C10 hot rod. Not only do they provide a fresh foundation, but those rails are fabricated from 11-gauge steel and fully boxed to be extra stout and capable of handling some serious power as well as serious forces from a performance suspension setup. Even more strength and stiffness comes from the trick tubular center crossmember with a dropout, sliding transmission mount that will accommodate just about any gearbox you can dream up.
Longbed to Shortbed and a 4-link Rear Made Easy
These chassis are for short wheelbase, shortbed pickups. That makes them perfect for a longbed to shortbed conversion with no cutting or welding required. Holes are already located in the rails for the stock bed bolts to make the conversion easy. The cab mount and core support brackets are also already welded on.
That stock “truck arm” rear suspension worked fine for stock ride heights, but things can get difficult when you drop the stance in the weeds. Not to mention that big crossmember standing in the way of the exhaust routing on a slammed truck. The tubular center structure in these chassis eliminates that stock truck arm crossmember, making it easy to tuck the exhaust. The rear rails are bare, allowing for a custom rear suspension of your choosing, or simply use the 4-Bar Rear Suspension Kit and C10 Rear Panhard Bar Kit that was developed specifically for these chassis. There’s some welding required here, but this allows you to dial in the proper geometry at your desired ride height. Also available is an adjustable, Bolt-On Motor Mount Kit designed specifically for this chassis that will mount up small block and big block Chevys as well as LS engines using bolt-on adapters.
Adapt the Perfect C10 Front Suspension for Your Truck
Up front, the rails match the contours of the stock chassis, leaving the door open to the ’67-’72 C10 front suspension and crossmember kit of your choosing. Kits like the QA1 ’67-’72 C10 Coilover Crossmember Kit will add drop, ground clearance, and adjustability unheard of with stock suspension components. Note that these front crossmember kits will require some drilling or welding to the boxed front rails. Also note that there is no provision on these frames for the stock steering box. Most aftermarket C10 crossmember and suspension kits use rack-and-pinion steering, offering yet another upgrade over the stock components.
This Speedway Motors ’67-’72 Chevy C10 Truck Frame Assembly is a great way to ditch that rusty and crusty original frame and start with fresh, solid steel that leaves the door open to whatever engine and suspension setup you choose to round out your perfect C10 truck project.
