Works Great for Flat Tappet Cams

December 25, 2013
I used this to protect the new Flat Tappet cam I installed in my 1957 Ford Thunderbird. Great assembly lube. The engine has about 600 miles on it with no problems. Great product for initial start-up.

Good stuff

March 30, 2012
I built two engines. First was stock just to see if I could and learn from my mistakes. Second was for a 500 hp engine to play on the streets with. Both were a success. No cam failures and used this product both times. One container used on the cam, crankshaft, wrist pins, seals, rockers, etc ... was enough to assemble 2 engines. Stays on the cam for initial engine fire-up and does not run off while sitting like assembly lube. Worked for an amateur so it must be good.
Pros:
  • works
Yes, I recommend this product.

No this lube is not designed to be used for anything other than listed. It is ideal for flat tappet camshaft lobes. You will need a general assembly lube for items such as rod and main bearings, seals, etc. See part numbers 60710004, 484101521, and 9154040 for a general assembly lube. Also we highly recommend that this moly based ISKY Rev-lube be used on flat tappet camshafts instead of one the above assembly lubes.

Red Line 80312 Engine Assembly Lube, 4 Oz.
(Part #60710004)

Red Line Oil Assembly Lube is not designed to be the cheapest – it's built to be the best. It has three times greater film-strength than conventional black Molybdenum Disulfide lubricants. Provides excellent rust and corrosion protection. Stays put and supplies a high film strength for protection. Excellent for crankshaft installation. Can be used safely with all metals, including bearings. Can be used with petroleum or synthetic oils.

  • Prepares potential wear surface and prevents metal contact before adequate lubrication can be supplied
  • Will not plug filters after initial engine start-up, unlike other assembly lubes
  • Provides 3x greater film strength than conventional black Molybdenum Disulfide greases
  • Excellent rust and corrosion inhibitor, allows for long-term storage
  • For use on camshafts, lifters, pushrods, piston skirts, main and rod bearings, and bolt threads

COMP Cams 159-12 Engine Break-In Lube Oil Additive
(Part #282159)

ZDDP-enhanced Engine Break-In Lube Oil Additive from COMP Cams provides maximum engine life while also allowing it to reach its full performance potential. It does so by improving the surface mating of valve train components (especially flat tappets), rotating assembly, rod journals, piston rings, valve guides and other vital areas of the engine. This proprietary break-in lube formula includes the optimum amount of critical additives ZDDP (Zinc & Phosphorus), Molybdenum, detergents and high grade base oil.

The multi-viscosity, mineral-based COMP Cams Engine Break-In Oil Additive is fully-formulated and requires no additives or supplements. In addition, the oil is fully compatible with gasoline, methanol and high octane racing fuels.

Red Line 81403 Cam Break-In Oil Lube Additive
(Part #60781403)

A lot has happened over the last year that affects your engine. The biggest is the reduction of zinc in the oils you use. Zinc is a great anti-friction additive but it also gets burned in the combustion chamber and then goes out the tailpipe of your car or truck.

This adds to the pollution problem on street driven cars, but not so much in race engines as they tend to be more efficient and have a better ring package.

Odds are the oil you are using does not have as much zinc in it anymore and you need to add this camshaft break-in additive.

If not, you can wipe out your new cam and lifters in the first 30 seconds of running.  Adding Redline's additive when you assemble your engine and with each oil change will ensure you have enough additives to help keep your engine alive.
