Q & A

What's in the Box

Fuel level gauges are designed to work with specific sending units that vary from one automobile or gauge manufacturer to another. Some increase resistance from Empty to Full, while others decrease as the level goes up. For a builder updating their vehicle with new gauges, this presents a problem in that the aftermarket gauges must match the sending unit located in the tank. This module will allow you to use your stock sender with any fuel gauge. You no longer have to remove the tank to add a separate sending unit or modify the sending unit that comes with a aftermarket gauge set.
  • Simply wires in-line between your gauge and existing sender
  • Allows you to use your stock sender with any fuel gauge
  • No need to remove the tank to add a separate sending unit

This product is a great time saver.

this product saved me hours of work removing my gas tank, when I put new gauges in. I don't think the sending unit sent with the gauges would fit in the tank in my car.
Pros:
  • Great product
Yes, I recommend this product.

I would have to dissassemble vehicle to change the fuel gauge snding unit. The labor would have been 375.00. Plus the damage to the paint that would most likely happen. Great Idea

  • great and simple

It's hard to get an idea of what your issue is by your description of "real time needle movement." If the tech support at Classic Instruments said an interface module would help you issues when you described it to them then I would have no reason to doubt them. To get any fuel level gauge to read accurately you have to use an interface module like this unit. They are a great addition even to a gauge that is working properly since you can adjust the full and empty readings to be correct.

This will work with nearly any fuel level gauge. Your gauge will have a specific resistance range that it requires from a fuel level sender. As long as your gauge operates with one of the resistance ranges that this Interface Module will transmit then it will work with your gauge whether its a standard gauge or digital.

Why 6 wires?... my sending unit only has 2 wires (which go directly to the gage), and the gage then has 1 additional wire (going to 12v power)? Am trying to Make-do for a 1987 F350 pickup, having 2 tanks and unknown type of sending units (20-80 ohm resistance). Currently the gages read Backwards and (when the sending units are grounded) the gages only go 1/2 up the scale (eg read Half Full). I suspect that the sending units were replaced by previous owner with GM units.

6 wires ? red 12volts black Ground Green to fuel gauge yellow to sending unit white low fuel light as long as both of you sending units are the same (ford is 73-10) you can install the module between the gauge and fuel tank selector switch on your dash. If you do not know what your senders are fill up tanks and remove wires from senders. Take an ohm reading between ground and sender. if you get close to the readings below it is a gm sender. 90ohms 0-90 30ohms 0-30 If you can not do this the module has the capability to custom set the empty and full points If you ground the sending unit wire the gauge should got to full or empty depending on the gauge if it does not you have gauge, wire of selector switch problem. Start from th back and keep grounding the sender wire until it pegs the gauge. if it never pegs it is most likley the gauge.

The gauge interface module works for multiple applications of which detailed instructions come with. Red is 12 volt switched power, yellow is to the sender, green is to the gauge and “S” terminal, white is to low fuel light, black is to chassis ground, and gray is a dip switch wire of which has been preset. Only black dip switches are set to match the sender and the gauge and instructions will list how they are set.

I have a ATL fuel cell with their sending unit mounted in the cell(240/33 ohms). The cell is mounted in a 1961 Ford Galaxie Starliner and I want to use the stock dash and fuel gauge which I believe is a lot lower ohms. Will this unit work with this application?

This interface module can be set for the aftermarket 33-240 ohms and then the gauge can be set to match the sender unit arm in the tank.

Choosing a fuel level sender:

What brand of gauge will you use?
Speedway carries the excellent Stewart Warner brand of fuel senders. They are compatible with all Stewart Warner and Classic Instruments fuel gauges.

How deep is your tank?
Measure the depth of your tank where the fuel sender arm will be located. Choose the sender with an operating range which includes that dimension.

Right or left-swing arm?
Most fuel gauge senders attach with a 5-screw pattern. 2 of these screws are farther apart than the other 3. Position yourself such that the 2 wider-spaced holes are closest to your chest; a right side sender will have the arm (or "float") extending to your right, and a left side sender will have the arm extending to your left. This only matters when replacing an existing sender. A first-time installation can use either one, just drill the mounting holes accordingly.

OHM
The OEM’s used several different resistance ranges for fuel level indication over the years. However, some of the aftermarket gauge manufacturers follow the common Stewart Warner values (240 ohm empty – 33 ohm full). The gauges and senders that we carry (385 & 391’s) use these standard Stewart Warner values.
