This is a great new concept for street rods with tubular or I-beam axles. It's hard to visualize how this works, but it's the hottest new idea out there!

Designed to replace the common Vega steering box, this rack and pinion assembly has a long passenger-side tie rod that hooks up to the right spindle like a Vega-style drag link. The rack unit is mounted on a sturdy bracket that bolts to your existing Vega box mount. The rack mounts much lower and farther forward than a box to provide more clearance, and those who have installed the system report quicker steering response and easier effort than a steering box.

The racks have 9/16" 26-spline shafts and the extension shafts are 5/8" 36-spline, just like a Vega box.

Specify 11/16" or 5/8" tie rod thread. The 5/8" is used with a LH heim joint, 11/16" is used with a LH tie rod end. Outer tie rod and jam nut not included.

If you are using heim ends, you may wish to order heim 175-0316 and jam nut 910-01056. If using tie rod ends, you may wish to order tie rod end 910-02919 and jam nut 910-01159.

This cross steer rack set up is for converting an existing hot rod with Vega steering to a cross steer rack and pinion. It is NOT a direct replacement on an original 1974 Vega. It bolts on in the same location as a Vega box on the hot rod applications and drops the rack lower so the drag link is more inline with the tie rod. It requires an extension from the input shaft to the existing column or u-joint since it is lower than the Vega box. It needs to be ordered for 5/8" heims or Ford Tie rod end for attachment to the steering arm on the passenger side of your hot rod.

This rack is designed to fit the frame widths on the 1928-32 Ford cars and vehicle weight in the 2500 pound range and is designed to work well with a spring over 4" drop axle.

  • Replaces the common Vega steering box
  • Has a long passenge-side tie rod that hooks up to the right spindle like a Vega-style drag link
  • Rack unit is mounted on a sturdy bracket which bolts to your existing Vega box mount
  • Has 9/16" - 26 spline (Input shaft)
  • Specify 11/16" or 5/8" tie rod thread
  • Outer tie rod and jam nut not included

Overall Assessment

Customers rave about the product's excellent fit, stating it improves steering dramatically. The rack and pinion option is appreciated for replacing Vega style boxes. The product is highlighted for its quality and a confidence-inspiring solution for straight axle projects. Safety and smooth operation are confirmed by users. The product has consolidated its place in the market due to its outstanding performance, fitting perfectly into compact spaces. Some users pointed to a minor decrease in turning radius, but overall, they find the experience equivalent to cars with power steering. They emphasized the superior steering when compared to a Vega box. The product is described as the best solution for straight axle cars and is highly recommended for its perfect fit, easy installation, and significant improvement in steering and handling. However, one reviewer noted the rubber boot had shown wear after four years.

Excellent Product

The steering in my Model A with the Vega steering box was lousy and felt like it had a delayed response. My 2 friends with hot rods with Vega boxes were not much better. The Rack and Pinion Conversion Kit fit perfectly and steers the car great. Right away I tested for "bump steer" and found NONE !!! The rack fits nicely and doesn't hang down lower the the Vega box did. The only problem I encountered was that with a 4" dropped axle you HAVE TO HAVE the "Unisteer 8050020 Cross-Steer Rack and Pinion Steering Shaft Extension". The layout of the advertizement did not show this and I found it by accident. I also want to add that the people at Speedway are excellent. I was going to get rid of the car because it handled so bad. After installing the rack and pinion kit it is precise and responds accurately and smoothly An unexpected benifit is that now the Model A turns much sharper. Steers like a sports car and accelerates like a hot rod. I'm very happy.

It's pretty cool having an option to replace a Vega style box with a rack and pinion. I haven't mounted it yet. After inspecting the unit, it looks like it very good quality. I'm confident it will work great for my straight axle project.

Installed this piece on a straight axle '54 Chev truck instead of a power steering system and this works amazing. Much easier than "armstrong" steering and maintains the feel of the road. Light weight and small so it fits easily within the space. Would use this over and over again.

I put this in my bone stock 1931 Model A , it's as close as you can get to plug and play , minimal fabrication , can't even see it from the outside , tucks up in place , small unit , easy as it gets , I would and probably will do this again in a heart beat .
