Fall Event Coverage: Cars and Coffee, a Nitro Cacklefest, and a Night at the Drive In
Speedway Motors has hosted some pretty amazing events this fall, with more to come! Here’s a recap of what we’ve been up to.
Art Gallery Opening and Cars and Coffee
On September 24th, the Museum of American Speed officially opened it’s new Gallery for Automotive Art. A reception featured luminaries from the art world as well as some hot rod legends. Automotive painter extraordinaire Tom Fritz even did a live painting demonstration. Then, the following Saturday, everyone hit the Speedway Motors parking lot for Cars and Coffee.
Cars and Coffee is always a favorite around here. Everyone gathers for coffee and an eccentric collection of cars gathered in the Speedway Motors parking lot. This time, instead of a quiet morning with some old cars, guests were treated to the ear splitting, eye-watering spectacle of nitro burning dragsters cackling, shaking, and otherwise disrupting an otherwise peaceful Saturday morning.
The Dave Crane/Nace, Ruetz, and Bohl Bantam Competition Coupe was recently made fully functional by restorer Rich Martin, and it was on hand to make some noise. It was joined by the Ditmars Bros Top Gas Dragster and the Logghe Stamping/Al Bergler Dragster (complete with Al himself there to supervise).
Pictures don’t do the scene justice. Here’s a video of the action:
A Night at the Drive In:
We don’t have to tell you that drive ins are scarce these days. Our own Jeff Karls has been busy building his own drive-in theater and opened up earlier this year. It’s an amazing facility that oozes vintage charm.
If you’re lucky enough to have a local drive-in, you’re bound to be parked next to a few minivans and some Hondas as you take in the feature. Cool experience, but the late models kind of spoil the vibe. Museum curator Tim Matthews knows that all to well, and he had the idea to throw a party to thank his crew and give us all an excuse to drive our old cars and take in a movie under the stars. The result was a scene that would be hard to find elsewhere this side of the 1960’s.
What’s next?
There’s still a month or so of decent weather ahead of us here in Nebraska and we’re not quite done having fun with our old cars. Check us out on Facebook and Instagram for more coverage of our upcoming events, including a party to celebrate some exciting news at the Museum of American Speed!
