The C6 was introduced in 1966 as a heavy-duty three-speed automatic transmission, and marketed as the “SelectShift Cruise-O-Matic”. Designed to offer lower weight, less complexity, and greater torque capacity for larger engines, the C6 featured a simple Simpson planetary gearset as well as the Borg-Warner flexible shift band for added shift quality and long time durability. Ford’s C6 was popular in pickups and cars with larger engines with different type bell housings available for Windsor, 351 Cleveland, FE, and MEL engines. Today, the C6 is still being utilized by many racers and rodders in numerous drag racing and off-road applications due to its reputation of being nearly indestructible.
