Confirm Crossmember Location, Exhaust Routing, And More in Your Allison 1000 Transmission Swap
When it comes to popular engine swaps like LS swaps, Coyote/Godzilla swaps, and Gen III Hemi swaps, most builders opt to update their transmission at the same time. Let's face it, who wants a modern, fuel injected engine with a notchy old four-speed behind it? Especially when you can run a stronger manual or automatic transmission in the tunnel to support your increased power level and still make it look old school cool with a period retrofit shifter of some sort. The typical 5- or 6- speed manual or automatic transmission found in the same donor car as your engine swap fodder is usually the best place to start for adding a modern transmission behind your swap engine.
The Allison 1000 electronically controlled automatic transmission, found behind GM's Duramax diesel engine in the Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra pickups from 2001-2019, has become one of these popular modern transmissions to swap. Part of it is the torque capacity, at well over 600 lb-ft of torque capability, and the other reason is the standard GM V8 bellhousing pattern it uses makes mounting it to a GM V8 a bolt on affair. Even the torque converter bolt pattern makes life easy, as the Allison uses the 4L80-E six bolt pattern. Of course, there are several adapters available to fit the Allison 1000 transmission to other engines as well, with the Cummins to Allison conversion being one of the more popular options.
The 5-speed Allison transmission was used in 2001-2005 models and featured five forward gears (5th as an overdrive). The 6-speed Allison transmission was used in the 2006 and up Silverado/Sierra and was upgraded to six forward gears with double overdrive. 2010 saw a change to the output shaft, so most swap enthusiasts utilize the 2001-2009 versions, of which use identical transmission cases. Being electronically controlled, you will have to use an Allison 1000 standalone controller to handle shifting, just like any modern electronic automatic you may use in your project.
Traditionally, building something with a transmission that was never meant to be installed in it would require the actual transmission, a floor jack or transmission jack, and a spotter or two keeping things in check while measurements were taken, parts tack welded, and so forth. It's not an easy or quick process, and it can be dangerous with a 300-plus pound Allison 1000 transmission being carefully balanced on a floor jack. There is a better, and safer way to mock up your Allison 1000 transmission in your project, and that is with the patent pending Speedway Motors SoloSwap® steel Allison 1000 mock up transmission.
Laser Cut Steel Plate for Strength, Simplicity, and Easy Storage
Unless you're a commercial shop doing a lot of transmission swaps, it is time consuming and complicated to disassemble the Allison 1000 transmission down to a bare case to shave enough weight to make it manageable for fabrication use. Most enthusiasts are using a good used Allison 1000 transmission from a Duramax powered Silverado for their project and the last thing anyone wants to do is crack it open and mess with the "magic" inside. Using a replica transmission to mock up your transmission swap for your project is much safer and your back will thank you for your efforts.
Past mock up options included a plastic transmission or foam transmission, which, while being light and easy to maneuver, these plastic transmissions often did not hold up well to repeated usage or did not allow physical attachment of a transmission mounted shifter or the driveshaft yoke for measurement of a custom driveshaft. They're also not the best option when localized welding and grinding is happening to fab transmission mounts/brackets either. Plastic blocks can easily be damaged from grinding or welding sparks, and frankly there weren't even any Allison 1000 mock up transmissions on the market! This is why we designed our SoloSwap® Allison 1000 transmission mock up system from laser cut 12-gauge steel with all accessory mounting holes accessible from the back side for simple "nut and bolt" assembly for mock up. No more thread inserts that work their way out of the foam transmission material or even needing the factory hardware during the mock up phase.
Ships Flat, Ready for Assembly and Can Be Stored Flat When Not Needed
Furthermore, our SoloSwap® Allison 1000 mock up transmission ships unassembled, saving you shipping costs and storage room when not in use. Simply assemble the mock up pieces following the provided instructions with the fasteners included and your mock up transmission is ready to use in minutes. Our steel mock up transmissions can also be easily disassembled for storage, unlike some steel mock up offerings that utilize folding tabs. Once those tabs are bent over the piece stays assembled. Store your disassembled mock up transmission wherever it will easily fit, such as under a workbench, on a shelf, or other location that a full size plastic transmission or real transmission wouldn't fit or have the weight capacity to handle.
Our SoloSwap® steel Allison 1000 transmission mock up weighs in at just over 16 pounds for the 4WD version and just shy of 17 pounds for the 2WD version, making it easy to handle and position all by yourself safely under your project. This allows the complete mockup of your transmission, right down to your choice of shifter linkage, driveshaft, fabrication of a transmission crossmember, and so forth, to confirm fitment, exhaust clearances, wire routing, floor pan modifications, and so much more easily. Additionally, the tailshaft portion of the mock up transmission bolts on, allowing you to switch between our 2WD tailshaft with slip yoke support, or 4WD with transfer case mounting pattern simply by purchasing the other tailshaft mock up portion.
Replicates The Allison 1000 Family of 5- and 6-Speed Automatic Transmissions
We did all the homework for you when designing our new steel SoloSwap® Allison 1000 mock up transmission assembly. We have provided all mounting holes to replicate the 5-speed Allison transmission and 6-speed Allison transmission housing, transmission pan, transmission mount pad, driveshaft yoke/transfer case placement, and more, allowing our mock up transmission to bolt to your engine for fitment checks, or you can mount to one of our SoloSwap® mock up blocks for the ultimate light weight mock up engines and transmissions mock up system.
Now you can quickly and easily confirm you have enough floor pan clearance for your Allison 1000 swap, along with exhaust routing, shifter cable or linkage, Allison 1000 standalone controller ECM wire routing and other items commonly associated with your transmission. So, whether you plan for a sole Allison 1000 transmission swap in your home garage, or your hot rod shop is looking for an easier way to make Allison 1000 transmission swaps happen in your customer's cars, our SoloSwap® bolt together steel mockup Allison 1000 transmission will help you get the job done safely and quickly.
