Charge Your Phone and Other USB Devices with Our Ashtray Retrofit Kit

Most USB devices, such as smartphones, Bluetooth speakers, and GPS units include a standard USB charging cable with a USB A male end and you’re lucky if it includes a wall power adapter for home charging. But what about when you’re on the go in your classic muscle car, truck, or hot rod and you want to keep your phone or GPS charged up for the road trip? Cigar lighter car USB port adapters are often iffy at best, and usually wiggle loose to the point your device stops charging and you won’t notice until your device dies on you mid-trip. The better solution is a direct-wired car charger port in your classic vehicle. But where to mount it?

Our car USB port kit features an aluminum housing that fits in many classic ashtrays, allowing you to simply unplug your charging cable and close your ashtray to maintain your classic interior’s appearances. Crafted from .040-inch aluminum sheet, we kept the dimensions to a compact 2-1/2 inches wide by 1-13/16 inches high and just 2-3/16 inches long to fit most ashtrays (or can be used to mount under the dash edge, in a console, or glove box). The car USB port kit includes two USB A female charging ports, a standard 5-volt 1-amp port and a high output 5-volt 2.1 amp port, with a blue LED charging indicator. The car USB port includes wiring connectors and only needs power and ground, which is usually found at the adjacent cigar lighter assembly. Alternatively, you can always wire directly to a fused hot connection at the fuse box (or key switched if you don’t want the ports to have power without the key on).
