Details

Highly recommended for all 1939-53 Flathead Ford/Mercury with aluminum heads. Flathead decks are thin and their threads are easily stripped. The outer end of these Grade 8 studs have fine threads and with the hardened washers (included) which prevent galling and ensure accurate torque readings.

Full set of head studs, nuts and washers for one engine. Specify year of engine: 1939-48 or 1949-53.

Head Studs vs. Head Bolts

I use head studs rather than bolts; both will break right at the deck if they do. The Offy studs are Grade 8... Ford used Grade 5. Studs can be adjusted "straight" whereas bolts must fit "dead on." Studs allow me to fine torque heads.

Nice kit but lacks finished quality

This kit does have all the parts necessary to convert an 8ba from bolts to studs. But the threads have burrs like the manufacturing tooling was not maintained properly or the threading process was pushed too fast. It isn't terrible but every stud needs to be dressed before it can be used. Finally what they do not tell you is that you cannot put the studs in place first if you are working with the engine in the truck. You either have to remove the steering column, battery box and distributor first or install the studs after the heads are in place. That is a little tricky holding the head gaskets in the right position. I used brass drift pins at either end of the head. Then the studs need to be turned into place using a bolt with two nuts.

I converted the head bolts to studs on my 8BA Flathead. The hardware kit would have been fine if it wasn't short 4 washers. The washers are hardened and a special diameter to fit the head and look right.

Looks like the tolling to manufacture these was worn out as the threads were shallow and the nuts jammed when installed. Had to chase the threads with a die to be able to got proper torque on the studs. I thought I would try this brand after 2 sets of Speedway studs were the same poor machining.
