In The Lead

“Speedy” Bill and Joyce Smith were very proud of the team they assembled during their six decades leading Speedway Motors. They were also extremely proud to keep Speedway Motors a family business. The couple’s four sons – Carson, Craig, Clay and Jason – have been integral to daily operations at Speedway Motors for many years.  Speedway’s family-led management team will continue serving customers with the same winning tradition established by Bill and Joyce for decades to come.

Carson Smith

Carson Smith has an extremely technical mind, with a mechanical engineering degree from the University of Nebraska and years of hands-on experience with race cars. Carson designed and engineered class-winning cars for Pikes Peak in 1991 and ‘92, with Robby Unser driving; he and Unser also set a Pikes Peak open wheel record in 1994. Carson teamed up with his brother Jason to win the American IndyCar Series title in 1989, again with Unser driving. Carson is heavily involved in Speedway Motors’ inventory management system, software development, programming and new product engineering, in addition to marketing and ecommerce efforts.

Craig Smith

Craig Smith manages and supervises dozens of commercial real estate holdings for Lincoln-based Speedway Properties. Craig’s degree in advertising from the University of Nebraska has helped provide him with the creativity and vision to direct the design, construction and renovation of many commercial property holdings, including several key projects in Lincoln’s historic Haymarket district. As a result, Speedway Properties has been recognized with many community improvement and preservation awards, in addition to multiple honors from the city of Lincoln.

Clay Smith

Clay Smith grew up around racing and competed on motorcycles before earning a bachelor’s degree in economics and a master’s degree in industrial engineering from Stanford University. He currently serves as President of Speedway Motors, overseeing the daily operations of both Speedway Motors and Speedway Properties. Clay plays an integral role in managing Speedway’s many racing and street rodding sponsorships and can regularly be found at industry and trade functions, ranging from Goodguys and NSRA events to the annual PRI and SEMA shows.

Jason Smith

Jason Smith has likely spent more seat time in a race car than any of his brothers, having competed in the American IndyCar Series in the late-‘80s and early-‘90s. In 1989, Jason teamed up with Carson and driver Robby Unser to dominate the American Indy Car Series and win that year’s title. Jason has a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of Nebraska and is actively involved in Speedway’s warehouse operations, product sourcing and purchasing. Jason also attends a wide range of races and car shows each year, including the PRI and SEMA trade shows.
