Very nice wheel shells

September 04, 2013
I bought these wheel shells for my 1948 Plymouth. I couldn't find a place that would make custom backspaced wheels at a reasonable cost so I decided to make them myself. Once the centers were placed in the wheels they were checked for runout and trueness. Both ended up being perfect. I'm very happy with the wheel shells, they were exactly what I needed to finish my project.
Pros:
  • wheels shells run straight and true.
Cons:
  • None
Yes, I recommend this product.

Is there a cross section drawing available? I am trying to build a set of wheels with approx. 3" BS, but all the wheels I have the recess either too far in so the caliper hits, or too far out so that the BS I need isn't possible.

The minimum ID is 2 3/4" from the outer face of one side and 3 7/8" from the outer face of the other side. You could use this to make a 3" backspace wheel as long as you put the deeper recess toward the outside of the vehicle.

Yes a trim ring should fit these wheel shells. We recommend test fitting the ring you plan to use before welding in the center just to be sure.

All wheels are made that way now days for disc brake caliper clearance reasons. The wheel center must be welded on so that it hits the smallest ID in the center of the wheel. Most of the time the "big bell" area as we call it will be in toward the center of the car to clear the brakes. On extremely offset wheels like a 1" or 2" backspace it may be necessary to flip the shell around so that the "big bell" is facing out in order to get the wheel center welded to the smaller ID. With a very short backspace wheel like that brake clearance is typically not an issue.

For project planning, and using the matching center you sell, what are the minimum and maximum backspacings possible in both the 'standard' and 'reversed' shell positions (if it's not equal)? I need this info for the 15x8, 15x10 and 15x12 sizes. Thanks!

I would not go shallower than a 2" back space and as much as a 6" back space on all of the widths.
