cylinder setting on back of tach, i have small switches, instead of turn knob. The instructions included with my tach says turn knob to a, b, c. But my tach has little switches to turn off or on. What sequence do i use for a 8 cylinder engine

Sorry for the discrepancy on the instructions. For your 8 cylinder engine you will need to have dip switches 1 through 5 to the 'off' (or down) and switches 6 through 8 'on' (or up). Make sure the tach is not powered on while adjusting the dip switches. It is best to disconnect the power and ground wires to make sure there is no power to the tach.
