these pads came with a hardware kit but no instructions. I can see how the larger metal clip attaches to the pad and is inserted into the caliper piston but cannot figure out what the small rectangular piece is used for. where does it go?

We do not use the clips with these pads. They have multiple applications and this clips are not needed for this application.
