I saw the diagram in your catalog for a brake system with these installed between the master cylinder and the proportioning valve, and am wondering if they can be installed after the proportioning valve, between it and the rear brakes?

Yes you can mount the residual valves before or after the proportioning valve. They will work fine either way.

Just what is the use of this product. what is it meant to do for the brakeing system? why cant you just use a proportioning valve?

A residual valve will keep pressure at the caliper so when you step on pedal it will apply brakes instead of pumping pedal to get pressure. These are a must if mastercylinder is mounted lower than calipers in brake system. These will not affect flow from front to rear like a proportioning valve.
