The difference is one uses an I beam axle and the other has a round tube axle. Sorry both pictures are of the tube axle. The only reason not to use the tube axle is if you want the vintage or "old school" look of an I beam axle.

This front end kit does not include hubs or brakes. It uses Ford spindles so you could use our Speedway brake kit number 91031945 or 91031946. You could also use the Wilwood kit number 83514011013 for a great look.

This kit will change the wheelbase to 107.5”. Your stock (non Super Beetle) wheelbase is 94.5”. Since the back of the car remains stock that means the front wheels get moved forward 13”.

We recommend retaining the stock VW master cylinder (which has a 19mm bore..3/4"). This is also the reason we insist on using the Wilwood brake kit with the axle conversion (Brake Kit part number 8351401501). This brake kit has an ideal match of looks, weight and performance for the size and weight for the VW conversion, especially when the typical tire size used on the front is taken into account.

I am thinking about purchasing this for my 1977 Super Beetle and my question is about the placement of the kit. I understand the front frame head of the super beetle will need to be cut. Do I base that cut on the length of the panhard bar?

Our Socalook VW Kit is engineered to bolt to a Standard Beetle floor pan. The cutting template is for the shape of a Standard Beetle body. If you wish to use this on a Super Beetle you would need to cut the stock front Frame Head from the Super Beetle chassis and attach the Frame Head from a Standard Beetle in its place. While this is possible, we cannot offer you any guidelines for that task. The "nose" of your Super Beetle has a different contour to it as well. Our cutting template will not be appropriate for your car so you will have to trim your body to your own design. You will need to allow clearance for the crossmember, spring and steering linkage and suspension movement as needed. If you are using our Socalook Kit, the position of the frame head will be dictated by the location of our Crossmember which in turn is positioned by the Radius Rods and they are located via the brackets that bolt just forward of the door hinge pillar (to bolt holes already existing in a Standard Beetle floor pan). So, for your situation, I suggest you test-assemble our crossmember, spring, axle, radius rods, and a replacement Standard Beetle frame head. Use this mockup to determine where on your Super Beetle floor pan you will need to cut and splice the Standard frame head into, and where to locate the radius rod support brackets. Your project sounds really interesting. We would love to see photos of it as it progresses! Perhaps at some future time we might develop a variation of the Kit for a Super Beetle application.

We offer the Socalook front end in only the dropped axle configuration. It might be possible to take one of our 46" straight axles (such as 91035125-46) and a pair of 91635011 brackets and then fabricate the remaining pieces to complete such a conversion, but there would be some significant geometry issues to resolve. We have no plans to offer such a kit in the foreseeable future.

Hello Joshua, Thanks for your interest in our product line! Our VW Axle Conversion is intended for the Standard Beetle. If you have a Super Beetle you will need to swap the front pan head for the model that accepts the Standard Beetle front axle beam. Our crossmember will not bolt to the McPherson Strut style of pan head (which is what the Super Beetle has). Please consider this information and let us know if you have additional questions or you wish to place an order. Sincerely, Ken Labenz Tech/Blue Diamond Classics

This kit is designed to use our early Ford spindles. I apologize, we currently don't offer a wide 5 brake kit for this.
