What's in the Box

We now have an affordable steel version of our famous hot rod steering column. The 1-3/4" black painted column still has a quick release steel hub that accepts the common 3-bolt Grant steering wheel pattern and uses common 3/4" DD u-joints. 15 gauge mild steel.

Note:  Length provided is measured from the end of the 3/4" DD shaft to the face of the steering wheel quick release hub and is therefore an overall end to end length measurement.

910-32311 Instructions (PDF)

Notes

  1. Measurement from end of DD shaft to lower face of column housing is 2-3/8".

Mixed review

August 01, 2015
This piece fit well and I was thrilled with the column until I bolted the steering wheel to the hub only to discover way too much play from the hub splines to the column splines. It is as if the release pin or bolt(whichever one you use) is too small or the channel for it is hogged out way to much. It is saturday and i cannot call Speedway.....and I hope I'm doing something wrong cause I would hate to send this back. I'll update my review when I hear back from speedway.
No, I would not recommend this product.

Great product for the price

January 04, 2015
I ordered this to go into my 1930 Pontiac with cowl steering. I needed a column that was about 16 inches long so I ordered the 24" column. When it arrived, I took the column apart and cut the inner and outer shafts to the lengths I needed. Put it all back together and installed. The outer shaft had a great black finish and the quick disconnect was tight with very little play in it. I would recommend this steering column to anyone who wants a basic column with a quick disconnect end.
Pros:
  • Value
Yes, I recommend this product.

I don't think so because this column comes with it's own quick disconnect hub no need to buy a Sweet Hub.

No the spline on the Seet Mfg. quick release is different than the spline on this column. You can use a quick release part number 91032859 on this column but that is the only other style that will fit. Sorry we do not have a rim style quick release that will fit.

Yes this has bearings inside of it. The construction of both are identical. This is made from a steel tube instead of stainless.

You will have to grind down the steering column shaft to get the U joint to fit on it, that's how I got mine to work.

EricM
That should be the correct 3/4" double D U-joint for this column. Once in a while you may have to file slightly on the double D shaft of the column so that the U-joint slides on easily.

No this column will not have a functional horn. You will need to mount a horn button on the dash or a spoke of the steering wheel if a horn is required. You may want to consider column part numbers 91032441 or 91032442 for basic steering column which will allow you to have a functioning horn.

GM wheel adapter? Is there an adaptor to fit a 69-94 GM style wheel to the 3-bolt hub on this column? Or to fit one of the 55-56, 57, or 59-60 Chevy car cut-down wheels? I have seen the 3-bolt to GM adaptor, can it just be reversed? Also, does this column have the ball bearings like the stainless column? Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks.

No this steering wheel must use a 3 bolt steering wheel only. There is no such adapter to put a stock GM wheel on it. There are ball bearings in this column as well. This is the exact same as the stainless column, just made with plain steel material.

Have these columns been redesigned for tighter tolerances in the quick release hub? I was reading the reviews on this column, (910-32311-24), and I see a few older comments are saying that the quick release spline is a bit sloppy. I don't see that "complaint" in any of the more recent reviews. Have they been redesigned for closer tolerances? I would rather have the solid mount 3 bolt column, (910-32490-24), but I don't want the Stainless steel look. Is this column available in plain steel painted black? It seems a shame to pay the extra money for a polished SS column and then sand it down and paint it.

The spline tightness has improved on column number 91032311 as requested. Also if you do not want to use the quick release function you could weld the hub onto the splined shaft to completely eliminate any possible slop. On column number 91032490 we apologize but the only way it comes is in polished stainless.

The outside tube of the column is 1 3/4" If your old column is also 1 3/4" and you are using the same angle (floor to dash), you can. Otherwise, you can purchase a drop from Speedway in 1 3/4", modify your original drop, or fabricate one.

If your original dash mount for the steering column will accept a 1 ¾” diameter column then 91032311 would be a match and available in many lengths to meet your steering wheel dish and personal requirements.

I read that this column can be shortened. My question is: on the 36" column can the outside tubing be shortened and the shaft left full length so that a steering heim can be used? I need to use a double steering u-joint #910-3245 at my Vega steering box.

Yes you can shorten the outside tube and leave the shaft at full length if you choose to. There is a bearing in the end of the tube that supports the inner shaft in the tube and a collar that fits on the outside of the tube that keeps it from moving up and down. The Hot rod steering column is designed the same just has a stainless tube
