Spindle Identification Guide (GIF)

Application

  1. Ford 1928-48 spindles are generally your best choice when using an original Ford axle or an aftermarket I-beam axle.
  2. Chevy 1949-54 spindles are specifically designed for use on tube axles. A shorter, thicker axle stub makes this a slightly stronger spindle ideal for use with heavier street rods.

Notes

Cross Steering vs. Traditional Steering

Traditional steering provides an original, period look, but will only work in these applications:

  • Four bar setup with '68-'73 Mustang box
  • Split wishbone or hairpin radius rod with reversed Corvair or '48-'56 Ford Puckup steering box
  • Parallel Steering Set-Up Guide

Cross steering (using a Vega box) is the preferred method for nearly all cross spring, beam axle suspensions. Ford used this design from 1935-on.

  • Less bumpsteer
  • More comfortable steering column angle
  • Frees up foot pedal / bellhousing room
  • Cleaner vehicle profile
  • Cross Steering Guide

Part # 9133906 This kit has 37-41 Ford style spindles and will bolt directly on a 46” king pin to king pin axle from 1928 thru 1948. The steering arms are flat as compared to some of the original arms from the 1934 vintage. You may need to do some modifications in this area to match the drop in your axle. We do offer bolt on cast arms in 1 ¾” drop and also in 3 ¾” drop if that would work better in your application. For the original steering on your 34 you would specify traditional steering for the drag link running up to the drivers side front wheel and the drag link may require modification and upgrade to work with an upper steering arm. An upper arm such as part number 7204010 or 91632007 or 91632009 would be an example. Depending on the drop in your original axle you may also want to consider a steering and brake kit such as number 9133946 which comes with the 1 ¾” dropped forged arms and simply remove the outer hole on the passenger side arm.

I am building a open wheeled rat rod style truck with a Mopar big block 440 engine and 727 transmission and would like to use your front end kit Part # 91639520 and this brake kit. But my question is do you think that the ford spindles can handle the weight of the engine and trans or should I use the Chevy spindle kit. And if so do you offer a front axle kit similar to the one I mentioned above.

Steering and brake kit number 9133906 utilizes the forged Ford spindles which are just as adequate as the Chevy and also use 11" brakes in the kit. To use an I beam axle kit you will need to use the Ford spindle kit as the Chevy will not fit this axle and the axle options for the Chevy spindles are Tube Axle only. Front end kits are good for vehicles in the 2500-2800 and we have some that get over 3000 pounds. In some cases an extra leaf needs to be added to the leaf spring on a single cross leaf application.
