Where do the springs mount ontop of the axle or can they be put low on the back side? I am building a rat rod with a s10 rearend the frame is based on a model t with a 13" kickup. The frame is 31" wide and the rearend is 48" wide backing plate to backing plate. Do you think this kit would work for my build?

Yes this kit should work just fine for you. The rear springs are intended to be mounted centered on top of the rear end housing.

About the Lower Rear Axle Bracket The lower rear axle bracket in this Deluxe Coil spring Rear Susp Kit is made for axle tubes of 3" diameter. the axle I'm using is 3.25" diameter. Do you make or modify a bracket for this size? If not can I modify the existing bracket by increasing the axle tube cut out dia? I'm using a Ford 8.8" rear axle from a 1999 Ford Explorer.

In many cases the rear suspension kit number 91649021 requires modification to meet the diameter of different manufacturers housing tubes. Whether to enlarge or decrease the size on the brackets for the housing tubes is up to the installer. We apologize but at this time do not offer different diameter housing brackets.

Will this kit work to change leaf to coil rear suspension on 1972 F-100? I want to change my `72 F-100 to either a coil spring or a 4 link rear suspension.

The springs in this kit and some of the kit components are for the lighter hot rod applications such as T-buckets and roadsters and have been used on vehicles up to 2500 pounds. With the application of your 72 Ford pickup you would need heavier and larger diameter springs to handle the weight requirements. Some of the parts could be used and modified as needed such as the axle housing mount number 91720243 and the frame bracket which would require alteration under number 91645100. Then you could use 5” rear springs such as number 252510 in around a 350 or 400 weight range. You could use the entire kit and then substitute the different springs if that is desired. It would change the kit price by merely $10.00. Otherwise we would recommend a heavier kit such as our ladder bars number 91645119 and the other necessary components.

How to Measure Your Housing Tech Tip (Link)

Need a certain length not found on our site?  Check out Currie's 9+ Rearend Calculator to have specially sized axles or rearend housings made for your specific application.  Custom orders will be built and processed directly through Currie Enterprizes and shipped to your door. For ease of ordering, please refer to Currie's Dimension Diagram

Installation Notes:

When installing new axles in rearends with posi traction differentials, be sure to install the driver's side axle first to keep the splines properly aligned.  Failure to do so may move the two splined gears out of alignment, and it may be difficult to install the driver's side axle properly if the passenger side axle is already installed.

If installation of passenger side axle is done first it may require two people when installing the driver's side axle, with both parties rotating reach axle until splines are in line and the driver's side axle fully sides into the housing.

To ensure you get the most out of your new 9 Inch components, Currie recommends that you perform a proper break-in process:

  • Use a name brand mineral-based gear oil, preferably 85w140 (Extremely high quality synthetic oils may be used once break-in process has been successfully performed)
  • Place vehicle on jack stands and let the rearend spin while the vehicle idles - run transmission in both forward and reverse periodically throughout the process
  • Continue to run the rearend until the pinion gets hot (place hand on bottom of the differential housing to verify this)
  • Proper break-in allows:
    • The ability to install new axles and hit the track the same day without worry
    • Extended life for rearend components
    • Keeps the quality and life of your gear oil

Note: If you find that your rearend is running somewhat "tight" be sure to add Currie's 9+ Friction Modifier to "loosen up".  If a more aggressive performance is desired, Friction Modifier is not needed.
