Q & A

What's in the Box

This rack & pinion conversion kit will finally give your classic 1968-70 Mustang the ease of steering and road feel modern cars have. Each kit is engineered to bolt in without sacrificing steering geometry or safety. The custom steering gear is engineered to match the stock suspension, and has NO BUMP STEER. Installation is extremely simple, since the unit is a true bolt-on.

Each kit includes everything needed to do a complete installation on a Mustang with the original column.

Notes

  1. This kit will fit Small Block application.
  2. Per vendor info, it will also work with a big block application provided that a Hooker Super Comp header is used.  Other headers used may lend to clearance issues.

Specs

  • Contains a 9/16-26 spline shaft.
  • 4.5 rotations lock to lock.
  • Overall width from tip to tip of tie rod threads = 39"
  • Center to center of mounting locations is 19 3/8"

This kit goes in place of the original steering linkage and with increased space requirement the use of a larger capacity pan could easily cause clearance issues. You may want to contact Ford Racing for pan changes as compared to stock and also possibly Unisteer for dimensions in the area of the pan.

This Unisteer rack and pinion for your Mustang works on many applications but in the case of headers you may have to use a third U-joint and support heim to bring the column shaft linkage to the outside to clear the header tubes.

The outer tie rods will be for the 68-70 Mustang and the taper will still be the same 7 degree. The tie rod ends are female to go onto the male threaded ends of the tie rods coming out of the rack. In either case the taper will be correct for the Ford application.

Global West Suspension TBF-7 1968-73 Mustang Lower Control Arms
(Part #91034275)

Global West tubular lower control arms improve the geometry of the stock Mustang suspension while adding much needed strength.

  • Stock length, non-adjustable design
  • Uses screw-in style ball joints
  • Accepts stock strut rods or Global West adjustable strut rods
  • Spherical bearing eliminates suspension bind
Global West Suspension ASR-6 1968-73 Mustang Adjustable Strut Rods
(Part #91034279)

Stock '68-'73 Mustang strut rods used a flimsy rubber bushing to control fore & aft movement of the wheel during suspension travel. This design was prone to deflection during hard acceleration and braking. A more positive approach to the problem would be to install an adjustable strut rod kit with a spherical rod end in place of the rubber bushing. Global Wests strut rods are designed as a bolt on application. No welding or frame modifications are required. When using a strut rod design of this nature, the deflection is totally eliminated. The suspension no longer deflects fore and aft. The vehicle now sees a lower a-arm rather than a two component system (strut rod & lower arm).

  • Bolt on application, no frame modifications
  • Allows you to dial-in your front suspension
  • Adjusting sleeve uses standard open-end wrench, no special tools required
  • Rods are powercoated black
  • Hardware included
