Application

When purchasing U-Joints, 3 easy steps will help ensure that they will be correct for your application.

STEP 1
Be sure to measure the diameter of the shaft and count the number of splines on the shaft. Some shafts have a blank spot ground on one side. To get the correct number of splines, use a flat edge and cover the blank half of the shaft through the diameter and count the splines on the other half. Multiply that number by 2, thus giving you the total number of splines on the full circumference of the shaft.

STEP 2

Choose which shaft type best suits your application: 3/4" weld on, 3/4" DD or 1" DD.

STEP 3
With these two pieces of information at hand, refer to our chart to find the appropriate part number of the ujoint for your specific application.

Notes

Tech Tip #1: When using more than two universal joints in a system, a support heim must be used.

Tech Tip #2: Increasing a U-Joint's angle of operation beyond 30° dramatically increases the stress on the joint, weakening the whole steering mechanism. If a greater angle is needed, add another u-joint.

Happy with u-joint

July 16, 2010
I really like that this u-joint can come apart. I needed to make a tool to pound this on my steering column without damaging the joint, and because I could take the u-joint apart I was able to do that. On the negative side, it would have been nice if I didn't have to pound it on the column after grinding down the OD of the GM column. In the end, it did exactly what I needed it to.
Yes, I recommend this product.

The common S10 input shaft is ¾” by 30 and if going to a full 1” double D the part number 91032393 would be correct. The later GM columns call for a 1” double D but in reality it is slightly smaller. The 1” double D is the outside of the rounded parts of the shaft for verification.

This U-joint is for the standard 34” x 30 spline to 1” Double “D”. The ¾ x 30 spline is common to GM 78-84 GM power steering boxes number 605 and some other variations. There are some other options or possibilities and we suggest an accurate measurement and spline count for verification. If there is a flat or master spline simply block off half of input shaft with the flat and count the side with the solid splines and multiply by two.
