Q & A

What's in the Box

Choosing a fuel level sender:

What brand of gauge will you use?
Speedway carries the excellent Stewart Warner brand of fuel senders. They are compatible with all Stewart Warner and Classic Instruments fuel gauges.

How deep is your tank?
Measure the depth of your tank where the fuel sender arm will be located. Choose the sender with an operating range which includes that dimension.

Right or left-swing arm?
Most fuel gauge senders attach with a 5-screw pattern. 2 of these screws are farther apart than the other 3. Position yourself such that the 2 wider-spaced holes are closest to your chest; a right side sender will have the arm (or "float") extending to your right, and a left side sender will have the arm extending to your left. This only matters when replacing an existing sender. A first-time installation can use either one, just drill the mounting holes accordingly.

OHM
The OEM’s used several different resistance ranges for fuel level indication over the years. However, some of the aftermarket gauge manufacturers follow the common Stewart Warner values (240 ohm empty – 33 ohm full). The gauges and senders that we carry (385 & 391’s) use these standard Stewart Warner values.

Difficult to assemble

September 21, 2014
While trying to attach the float arm to the sending unit, I broke the rheostat. The sending arm must be bent at a PERFECT 90 degree bend. And flattened at the bend. very difficult to accomplish. Got it right with the second unit.
No, I would not recommend this product.

Perfect replacement

May 03, 2013
FIxed my Stewart Warner Fuel Gauge problem of inaccurate reading. Measured the ohm's on my old one and realized it was out of range (440 ohms) Slipped this one in (easy) and back to correct readings again. Only adjustment was cutting the float rod to correct length.
Pros:
  • Easy Install
Cons:
  • None
Yes, I recommend this product.

The 33-240 sender is as close as we have listed to your 40-250 gauge. If your 250 is empty reading and the sender putting out 240 empty your gauge would never get to empty before you ran out of fuel.

Fuel Gauge Interface Module
(Part #91012910)
Fuel level gauges are designed to work with specific sending units that vary from one automobile or gauge manufacturer to another. Some increase resistance from Empty to Full, while others decrease as the level goes up. For a builder updating their vehicle with new gauges, this presents a problem in that the aftermarket gauges must match the sending unit located in the tank. This module will allow you to use your stock sender with any fuel gauge. You no longer have to remove the tank to add a separate sending unit or modify the sending unit that comes with a aftermarket gauge set.
  • Simply wires in-line between your gauge and existing sender
  • Allows you to use your stock sender with any fuel gauge
  • No need to remove the tank to add a separate sending unit
