Good quality and value for the money

October 19, 2014
Slight blemishes in the gel coat at mold parting lines. Good quality for a chopper gun layup with the excessive resin that goes with this particular production technique. Adequate thickness for strength everywhere except firewall and the dash if you want to hang the steering column from the dash, but those are both easily reinforced as explained in the kit construction manual.
Pros:
  • good value for the money
Cons:
  • chopper gun fiberglass is a bit resin-heavy
Yes, I recommend this product.

How thick are these bodies and do they need reinforced on the sides and back for support?

Answers

The thickness varies a bit on my body, but generally pretty close to the 1/4" from the "official" answer. The builder's manual suggested using 3/4" marine plywood to reinforce the firewall, and I plan on doing the same for the dash to support a column hanger for my steering. I have sat on the sides and back of my body and did not detect excessive flex there, so I think a properly mounted body according to the builder's manual will be more than adequate without reinforcement. I would reinforce around the door opening if you want to use the add-on door kit later, a lot of the strength of the Standard body is from the solid "tub" structure.

The 1923 T roadster bodies are approximately 1/4" thick and do not require additional reinforcement for under normal circumstances

The mold is 5 pieces but it comes out of the mold in one piece. You can see the places where the molds were put together as ridges in the gel coat.

Part number 9002200 The bare body comes without the floor and we also offer it with a flat floor or a 3” channeled floor. The floor could be installed by the customer if he has some background in fiberglass. If you have never worked with or repaired fiberglass we suggest our book working with fiberglass or visiting your local library for some basic information. Installation of the floor would require cutting a plywood floor in the dimensions desired to result with the desired body height in relation to the frame, prepping the fiberglass and plywood and the layering of the saturated with resin fiberglass mat and cloth. Transmission tunnel is offered separately to make that portion of installation more easy.

What are the dimensions of the dash on this body?

What are the dimensions of the dash on this body?

The face of the dash is 6" tall all the way across, the flat part is about 4 1/4". Outside to outside is 38 1/2" at the widest part.

The dash panel in the T bucket bodies is not perfectly square and both sides where the posts attach angle inward on both sides. Some basic dimensions are as follows: 1) Overall width with posts not installed and at widest point above the door is 38 ¾”. Allow 1 ¾” per side for windshield post attachment for a net maximum width of 35 ¾” 2) Overall maximum height is 6” with the exception of the outer 3 ½” per side angles upward from the bottom to a net height of 4 ½” at the ends. 3) Upper 1 ¼” angles rearward to create a body line or eyebrow to limit the flat surface of the dash for gauge installation. Bottom has a lip or flange that extends rearward ¾ “ to add strength and make more ridged. 4) Actual flat surface for gauges and switches is 35 ¾” by 4” with the outer ends slightly shorter because of the lower edge angling upward. Net height at the ends with the angle upward calculated in and the eyebrow is 3” Again the dash area is NOT perfectly rectangle shaped and a straight edge reveals slight crown in the dash area.

Our T bucket bodies will fit all our frame/chassis kits and also our bare frames. If you desire the Traditional frame with the additional kick up in the rear and the arched rear cross member for the high arch spring the body will still work fine in the standard location. Frames widen from the front at 23.5 to 28.5” in the rear and the channeled bodies fit over maximum frame width of 25 7/8” and is compatible with the Traditional frame.

The larger drivers do lack sufficient room for comfortable driving and enjoyment but the desire for a true hot rod has people of larger stature in the T buckets fairly frequently. The Low Boy 32 or 32 Roadster have more leg room and steering wheel to seat back room for a better fit on long trips. The 27 roadster has similar dimensions with the following specifications. Dash to back of seat 39 ½", widest point of body 49", and height of body 24".
