Q & A

What's in the Box

Speedway Motors now offers a reproduction version of one of the most popular carburetors ever used, the original Stromberg 97! Original equipment on 30s and 40s cars and trucks, the Stromberg 97 has long been favored by flathead hot rodders and racers who realized the performance qualities of this timeless fuel supplier.

There have been numerous attempts to reproduce this unit, with little success. "Speedy" Bill Smith of Speedway Motors in Lincoln, Nebraska, took on the challenge to make a great product even better. The 9 Super 7 ® Carb brings this reproduction of the original Stromberg 97 2 barrel carb into the 21st Century!

Speedway Motors has incorporated all of the improvements shown above while maintaining the carburetors original look. Features such as the choke assembly, accelerator pump, main jets and cosmetics have all been faithfully retained. Additionally, each carburetor is individually flow tested and inspected for leaks. Perfection is the result!

Aesthetically, the 9Super7 is nearly identical to the stock unit, minus the large 97 logo that appeared on the side and the patent numbers found on the float bowl area. Upgraded internal parts include; the float, needle, and seat. Jetting and power valve settings remain as they were for the original 97 carbs as well as the cfm and vacuum specs.

The other similarity that the 9 Super 7 shares with the original 97 is the setup and tuning necessary to yield a well-running machine. While perhaps not as simple as bolting on a single four-barrel, the 9 Super 7 makes setting up a multiple carburetor induction system easier than when Strombergs were available new. All thats required is an intake, a linkage system, a Uni-Syn syncing tool, and a little patience. Be sure to include the Secondary 9 Super 7 when installing multi-carb setups. Our 3 Carb kits come with one primary carburetor and two secondary carburetors while the 2 Carb kits are both primary carbs.  See our Multiple Carburetor Tech Tip for more information on using the 9 Super 7 in a 2x2 or 3x2 carb set-up.

On the primary 9 super 7 carb the throttle shaft extends from carb body .983" and has the hole on the end to pin the linkage. There is a brass sleeve that the throttle shaft rotates in that extends from the carb body .400 and this leaves the useable throttle shaft length of .583. There is sufficient room for progressive linkage and the manual throttle linkage that rotates over the sleeve.

  • All-new tooling for crisp, flawless castings
  • New aluminum base assembly allows for cooler fuel temps and better fuel efficiency as compared to the original cast iron design
  • Stainless steel screws and hardware
  • Choke assembly, accelerator pump, and jets have all been faithfully retained and accept standard Stromberg parts
  • Features original Stromberg 0.97" venturi diameter
  • Modern Nitrophyl float and Neoprene gaskets
  • Original troublesome needle and seat replaced by a Grose-style fuel inlet valve to better cope with higher fuel pressures and improved high speed running
  • Will not stick or dribble like the old Viton-tipped needle and seat setups
  • Grose-style jet valve wont corrode in modern fuel, something the original needle and seat units cant do
  • Comes with a No. 65 power valve and 0.045" main jets, identical to the stock 97
  • Extended brass throttle shaft to simplify multi-carb linkage

Notes

  1. Features .045" main metering jets and a number 65 power valve, which is the same as a stock 97 carb.
  2. Replacement jet access plug gasket use # 91011542, replacement needle & seat gasket use # 91011543.
  3. Includes base gasket.
  4. The 9 Super 7 ® will operate suitably with fuel pressures ranging from 1-1/2 psi to 4 psi, with a desired setting of 2-1/2 psi to 3 psi. Fuel pressure from 4 psi to 7 psi will cause the carburetor to run excessively rich and may cause flooding. Flooding or leaks caused by excessive fuel pressure do not indicate a faulty carburetor.
  5. There are no provisions for a vacuum advance line. Ford & Mercury engines 1949-1953 using stock distributors will need an alternative place to connect the vacuum line.
  6. Our independent tests produced these flow numbers:
    • 3" of Vacuum - 60 CFM
    • 10" of Vacuum - 110 CFM
    • 15" of Vacuum - 136 1/2 CFM
    • 28" of Vacuum - 184 CFM

Nice Carburetor, worked well out of the

February 02, 2015
I used one on my stock 8BA flathead and it worked well right out of the box. Note: There are no vacuum ports on these units at all. I am putting them on a 3 deuce setup for a "nailhead" Buick with an Offenhauser manifold. I had to drill the base and install a 3/8" vacuum tap for the PCV valve.
Pros:
  • Availability
Cons:
  • no vacuum taps
Yes, I recommend this product.

Works great AFTER I repaired the leaks

May 04, 2014
Carb was recommended to me by friend for my stock 1934 Ford. This carb connects up to the stock Ford linkage easily except for the hand throttle. The throttle shaft is there, but no fitting is included on the carb and all Speedway has is an available $10, really ugly accessory fitting that still needs more parts to work. The problem is that the diameter of the throttle shaft on this carb is larger than the stock 97. However, with a little drilling (a round file will also work), the stock Stromberg hand throttle fitting off of a real 97 is usable on this reproduction carb. Then use the stock spring from your 97 as a spacer to make up for the smaller diameter on the rest of the throttle shaft. Place a small washer on the shaft between the fitting and the carb, then a cotter pin goes right into the existing holes. After this modification, the stock Ford hand throttle linkage also connects right up. The main problem that I had with this carb is that it leaked from all 3 of the fitting plugs on the bottom front. They use cheap hard plastic washers that don't seal. I was going to send the carb back, but first I tried Permatex Aviation Form-A-Gasket (Part No. 3H) and then tightened the screws real tight. That worked and it hasn't leaked since.
Yes, I recommend this product.

Merchant Response:

Speedway Customer Service sent this customer a prepaid return label to return the 4th carb to us for a full refund. The Speedway Motors Product Development Team has worked hard over the last couple years to improve many aspects of this carb in order to continue to offer the highest quality and highest performing carb that we possibly can. Please note that the 9 Super 7 carb will operate suitably with fuel pressures ranging from 1-1/2 psi to 4 psi, with a desired setting of 2-1/2 psi to 3 psi. Fuel pressure from 4 psi to 7 psi will cause the carburetor to run excessively rich and may cause flooding. Flooding or leaks caused by excessive fuel pressure do not indicate a faulty carburetor.

The linkage required will depend upon the intake and spread of the carburetors. Also if you want to run progressive linkage the front carb has to be the primary in order to avoid lean running cylinders if using the rear carb as the primary such as on intake number 5601075. If running one carb at the front like the 5601076 or the 3251100 most customers run two primary carbs with a solid link.

The 97 Speedway carb or the 94 from Edelbrock could have been used but also could have been a Rochester. On the three bolt pattern holding the carb to the intake center to center on the side with two is 3 1/8” and from one of these to the single nole is 2 7/16”. Your throttle linkage may be on the passenger side and if so then we recommend the Edelbrock 94 as we also offer the linkage arm with the ball for hook up to your original solid rod linkage. If that isn’t an issue then the 9 super 7 would work with many of the cable and pedal assemblies we offer.

If you have the original intake or aftermarket for original carburetors the Speedway 9 Super 7 carb will NOT work. It is a 3 bolt 2 barrel carb as compared with a two bolt mount single venture carburetor that the stock intake manifold requires.

This carburetor will work fine on your engine but it will limit the power output. These 9 Super 7 carbs are very small in comparison to that used on more modern V8 engines and are less than 1/4 the CFM of a typical 4 barrel street carburetor.

You cannot run all secondaries as there are no adjustable idle circuits. If you are using straight linkage you need to use four primary carbs.
February 17, 2014
EricM
The secondary 9 Super 7 carbs do not have the idle circuits so adjusting to obtain the desired idle would be difficult. It would pull off the main circuit and would not be adjustable. We would suggest primary carbs on the 4 and the jets may require change depending on your altitude.

Speedway’s 9 super 7 carb is a replacement for an original Stromberg 97, Holley , or Ford 94 3 bolt carburetor. For verification the bolt pattern of the rear two bolts is 3 1/8 and from the centerline of these two bolts to the single bolt side center is 1 7/8”. If your 41 is all stock some linkage modification may be needed.

Part number 91511655 Customers have carefully drilled and installed a tube in the base of these carburetors for a vacuum source.. You could also draw vacuum from the intake itself or contact Vintage Speed in California for a thin spacer plate that has a vacuum port.

Edelbrock 1103 38-48 Ford/Mercury Flathead Slingshot Manifold, 2 Carb
(Part #3251103)

Edelbrock has decided to re-release this legendary manifold; giving a new generation a chance to own this historic benchmark. Using a pair of two barrel carburetors mounted in a "Y" configuration, this manifold unlocked the potential of Ford's versatile flathead platform for thousands of enthusiasts across the country. The Slingshot manifold is designed for use with 1938-48 style Flatheads, some late model blocks can be modified to work with these heads. It works with standard three bolt Stromberg, Holley and Demon carburetors and allows for the use of a period correct generator mounted in the stock location. 7-3/4" tall.

This is a reproduction of the original intake manifold designed by Vic Edelbrock Sr. in 1938. The Slingshot is a real show stopper and even includes stainless acorn nuts for mounting the two halves.  Among the first ever hot rod parts, the famous Edelbrock Slingshot still ranks among the best flathead intakes out there. The Slingshot produces more peak torque than the competitors two carb intakes, as well as more overall average power and torque. The ’38-vintage, two-piece Slingshot more than holds its own even today. If you want a high-rise, Edelbrock’s design is far superior. Includes assembly hardware and gasket #8700.

Speedy's 9 Super 7 Chrome Primary 3-Bolt 2 Barrel Carburetor
(Part #91511657)

Speedway Motors now offers a reproduction version of one of the most popular 2 barrel carburetors ever used, the original Stromberg 97! Original equipment on 30s and 40s cars and trucks, the Stromberg 97 has long been favored by Flathead builders, hot rodders and racers who realized the performance qualities of this timeless fuel supplier.

There have been numerous attempts to reproduce this two barrel carb, with little success. "Speedy" Bill Smith of Speedway Motors in Lincoln, Nebraska, took on the challenge to make a great product even better. The 9 Super 7 ® carb brings this reproduction of the original Stromberg 97 into the 21st Century!

Speedway Motors has incorporated all of the improvements shown above while maintaining the carburetors original look. Features such as the choke assembly, accelerator pumpmain jets and cosmetics have all been faithfully retained. Additionally, each carburetor is individually flow tested and inspected for leaks. Perfection is the result!

Aesthetically, the 9 Super 7 ® is nearly identical to the stock unit, minus the large 97 logo that appeared on the side and the patent numbers found on the float bowl area. Upgraded internal parts include; the float, needle, and seat. Jetting and power valve settings remain as they were for the original 97 carbs as well as the cfm and vacuum specs.

The other similarity that the 9Super7 ® shares with the original 97 is the setup and tuning necessary to yield a well-running machine.

  • Grose-style jet valve wont corrode in modern fuel, something the original needle and seat units cant do
  • Comes with a No. 65 power valve and 0.045" main jets, identical to the stock 97
  • Extended brass throttle shaft to simplify multi-carb linkage

Set of 3 Speedys 9 Super 7 3-Bolt 2 Barrel Carburetors, Plain Finish
(Part #915116553)

Speedway Motors now offers a reproduction version of one of the most popular carburetors ever used, the original Stromberg 97! Original equipment on 30s and 40s cars and trucks, the Stromberg 97 has long been favored by flathead hot rodders and racers who realized the performance qualities of this timeless fuel supplier.

There have been numerous attempts to reproduce this unit, with little success. "Speedy" Bill Smith of Speedway Motors in Lincoln, Nebraska, took on the challenge to make a great product even better. The 9Super7 ® Carb brings this reproduction of the original Stromberg 97 2 barrel carb into the 21st Century!

Original equipment on '30s and '40s cars and trucks, the Stromberg 97 has long been favored by flathead hot rodders and racers who realized the performance qualities of this timeless fuel supplier.
