Q & A

What's in the Box

The Vega Manual Steering Box is the foundation of a cross steering system, which is the most popular steering system for modern Hot Rods. These boxes are compact, durable and are getting more scarce every day.

This unit bolts up to all normal Vega-type brackets and accepts Vega-spline u-joints, pitman arms and accessories. Durable cast iron and machined steel construction will give years of high-mileage service.

  • New castings and components
  • Faithful reproduction of size, shape and mounting hole locations
  • No core charge

Cross Steering Guide (GIF)

Note:  Vega steering box is not adjusted at the factory and therefore, it is necessary that the steering box be adjusted upon installation per the instructions as provided on the PDF instruction sheet.

910-32204 Instructions (PDF)

Notes

  1. Must use pitman arm #702-2924 or #702-2925.
  2. Recommended for vehicles under 2800 lbs.
  3. The Vega box is the best choice for Model T - 1934 Ford chassis. 1935-48 chassis can use this Vega box or, if you need power steering, use Saginaw box 910-32500.
  • Output Shaft (for Pitman arm):
    • Splined area tapers from .997" to .934"
  • Centerline through the output shaft to the front of the box is about 3"
  • Overall length of the box not including the input shaft is 5-3/4"
  • Input shaft extend rearward 1-3/16"
  • From adjust screw to end of output shaft is 8"
  • From outside of box to area on mounting surface is 4-1/2"
  • Box has a swell in the casting that extends past the mounting legs an additional 1/4"
  • Mounting pattern is 2-3/4" and 4-3/8" center to center of the three mounting holes

Worthwhile upgrade

March 15, 2015
I installed this on a '35 Ford coupe. After a few adjustments, steering is very positive with only slight play. It drives like a different car. I was concerned about clearance next to the Buick 3.8 L but there was plenty of room.
Yes, I recommend this product.

Needs better quality control.

September 14, 2012
The first one had greater than 8 in. of free play at the steering wheel. A replacement was sent and the adjusting retainer nut was loose. The second box required a lot of adjustment. If it does not stay in adjustment I will replace it with a Flaming River unit.
No, I would not recommend this product.

Merchant Response:

Please note that this steering box may need adjusting prior to use. When set up correctly, the steering wheel should have about one inch of free play. Please see the instruction sheet for more information.

We apologize for limited availability of actual part number. The number you referenced is likely the casting number and not informative as far as the actual part number. If your steering box follows the specifications listed on our website and is mounted on the frame with the pitman arm pointing forward and the drag link going to the passenger side front wheel it is likely the Vega box. The other GM boxes like the 525 and others does not have the same general appearance and are a lot bigger. Under the details tab there are some dimensions and shaft size to compare with your box.

Can I use this box for traditional steering with the pitman arm facing up? I have it mounted below the frame rail with the pitman arm pointed up. It seems like it will work but your guides all say not to use it for straight steering. Now I'm nervous.

The geometry would be o.k. and could work for traditional steer running the drag link to the drivers side wheel when mounted with the output shaft pointing to the outside of the car and pitman arm pointing up. In doing so you would want to use a box with grease for lubricant as one with liquid may run the input shaft gear out of the oil.

The Speedway Vega box utilizes a lightweight gear grease similar to the weight in a grease gun cartridge. The Flaming River box on the other hand uses gear oil.

It works fine on my 1970 Camaro drag car, and it is in no way lightened up in the front, from what it was from factory.

The Vega box is a choice of many hot rodders because of it’s size and weight. It is designed for lighter weight vehicles under 3000 pounds but is readily used on the Tri-5 gassers and many heavier high power street rods. If you have a heavy vehicle and looking for a heavy duty box you may want to consider the 525 box under part number 91032277 which will function the same way as a Vega in a heavier version.

Part number 91032204 This lightweight and compact Vega box is the answer to a lot of hot rod builders. It can be used in your 53 Chevy along with the gasser axle front ends. If a heavier box is desired we also offer 91032277 which is a 525 box with similar attributes and depending on pitman arm can be used just like the Vega on cross steer applications.

We have a Vega Box Combo Kit 9163220 which has the Box, Bracket and Pitman Arm. This is for a Cross Steer Style. You'll need to get a new Drag Link to go from the Pitman Arm over to the Right Steering Arm, a new Tie Rod to from the left Steering Arm to the right Steering Arm, and new Steering Arms. We will need the Eye to Eye Measurements for the Drag Link and Tie Rod, and the center to center bolt measurements from the Spindles to see if we might have some Steering Arms that will work for your truck.
