We can sub the pitman arm in this vega style steering kit for one that is already drilled for use with 5/8" rod ends or you can drill out arm in this kit to 5/8"

The vega box will work in the same fashion with the pitman arm pointing forward and the drag link from the pitman arm to the passenger side wheel for cross steer. You may also be interested in the pitman arm and mounting plate and we offer a kit under number 9163220 that includes all three.

Mount location varies on the application, engine used, and other related facts. On the T bucket the Vega box is mounted fairly well forward at 7” from the center line of the tube front cross member. With the specific application we may be able to make some suggestions. Normally the box mount sits just ahead of the motor mounts and hangs down below the frame with only one box mount bolt actually going through the frame itself. You may want to check the photos of our various frames for some insight into the mount location.

What is the recommended tighening torque on the pitman arm nut? Is box shipped with gear lube installed?

The Vega box DOES come shipped with lube. The splined output shaft is tapered and the nut should be torqued at 80-85 pounds. The pitman arm DOES have a top and bottom to accommodate the taper on the output shaft. It does come with the nut and lock washer included.

The Vega box could be mounted with the mount flange facing up under the frame and the pitman arm sticking up on the outside of the frame for traditional steering. Hood up to the input shaft would be difficult and also proper lubrication of the shaft and internals will likely be inadequate. For an application such as referenced we recommend the 91032344 short shaft Mustang box for just what you are needing.

The Vega box is designed to be used in a cross steer setup with the box mounted behind the axle centerline. With the box mounted behind the front axle centerline and the pitman arm pointing to the front of the car when you turn the steering wheel to the right the pitman arm will swing to the left. So the output of the steering box will be the opposite of the input. If you rotate the wheel left the pitman arm will turn right. http://static.speedwaymotors.com/images/charts/how-crosssteering.gif

This steering box is commonly used on light weight cross steer applications including our gasser front axle kits. As long as the front of your vehicle is fairly light weight then it should work fine.
