What's in the Box

These forged steel drop axles are perfect for your next street rod project!  Our dropped front axle sizes keep the wheels inside the fenders.  Keeping the wheels tucked in the fenders allows for a lower ride height with adequate tire clearance.  All of our I-beam axles feature a 4 inch drop and are designed as a replacement Ford front axle.  With a versatile design, these dropped axles also allow you to use your stock 1937-48 Ford spindles or our Ford I-beam reproduction spindles.  47" wide from king pin centers, our street rod axles are sized according to original mounting specs, making a stress free conversion for your classic Ford styled front end.
  • 1-piece forged steel design
  • Axle forging is ground smooth and bead blasted for a superior finish
  • 4" drop
  • 47" wide (king pin centers)
  • Accepts stock '37-'48 Ford spindles or Speedway Ford-style reproduction spindles
  • 34" spring perch centers
  • Use with 29" cross spring
  • 2-1/4" tall wishbone boss

Note: In order to use this axle with 2 inch wishbones, you will need to machine the inside of your wishbones and/or the axle for them to work together. The spring perch bosses on stock Model A wishbones are 2-1/4 inches, as are '37-and-later Fords, but '32-36 Ford wishbones come in at 2 inches.

Doesn't appear to be forged.

December 06, 2013
Although this axle is "very stout" it is lacking the telltale signs of a true forging. The thick parting line down the center (usually ground down but still prevalent) leading me to believe this is a casting not a true forging. Even a casting would have a parting line (though a lot thinner) this is lacking a parting line altogether leading me to wonder just how this axle was made. Again this axle is very heavy duty and should work fine for many applications but I wanted to see some evidence of a true forging. This is the only reason I gave it 3 stars and not 5. Would I buy it again? Yes I would. Speedway has never let me down yet.
Pros:
  • very stout
Cons:
  • no evidence of a true forging
Yes, I recommend this product.

This axle will work for the wishbones and spring behind and spring number 71533027 which is designed for the axle and wishbones. You will also need the 5 degree spring pivots number 91633001 to help with shackle and spring bind. This is the style used on our Tribute T.

I'm sorry to say that no, this would not work with an unsplit wishbone. This needs to be used with split bones, hairpin radius rods or a 4 bar system.

Yes your steering and brake kit 9133902 will work with this axle other than the tie rod tube. You will need to cut 1" off of the tie rod tube or order a shorter one such as 91631-46 in order to fit this 47" axle correctly.

Dimensionally is this the same axle as your chromed forged drilled axle and will stock 37 ford bone fit this axle? I purchased one of your drilled chrome forged axles last year and that axle is a beast! I love it but now I need one undrilled, plain, and I'm running stock 37 ford split wishbones.

The boss for the wishbone on this axle is 2 ¼” tall and in some cases the Ford wishbones were for a 2” tall boss. In order to use this axle with the 2" wishbones you will need to machine the inside of your wishbones and/or the axle for them to work together. Sorry we do not offer these axles with shorter 2" perch bolt boss if that is what your wishbones measure.

This is a cross between a 46 and a 48” axle and uses a 29” spring. Perch centers are 34 3/8” and the perch bolt holes are 11/16” with the perch leaning inward approximately 1” for shackle attachment.
