What's in the Box

Just what's needed to update your classic Tri-Five Chevy! Eliminate those archaic ball bearings and gain first class stopping power all at once with this front disc brake conversion kit. Rotors and caliper brackets bolt onto your original spindles with no modification or machining required. Calipers mount to the front of the spindle.

This disc brake kit will increase the total front track width by 1-3/4" (7/8” per side).

  • Uses 11" rotors and 1969-72 GM calipers (7/16"-20 inlets)
  • May not clear some 14" wheels
  • Bolts onto stock '55-'57 spindles with no machine work
  • Includes rubber brake hoses

Notes

  1. This kit will not work with the original '55-'64 Chevy 4-wheel drum brake master cylinder. It does not have the capacity to supply the proper amount of pressure for front disc brakes. For best results, we recommend using master cylinder booster kit 910-31974 (disc/drum) or 910-35557 (disc/disc) with this front disc brake conversion.
  2. Front drum-to-disc brake conversions also require a proportioning valve to be installed in the rear brake line circuit. The proportioning valve modulates pressure to the rear brakes which is necessary to prevent the rear brakes from locking up in an emergency stop situatiuon. Recommended master cylinder booster kits 910-31974 and 910-35557 incude an adjustable proportioning valve to allow for a proper installation of front disc brakes.
  3. Some grinding to the steering arms may be required to achieve full turning radius.

Check anywhere for a 57 Chevy brake conversion system and you won't find one that is more straight forward and value priced. You can order this kit as is or with other options, including master cylinder and booster. Great Value.

I like that this went on so easy, and was very seamless. I wish that there was the option to swap out braided lines for rubber ones, because of the swell that rubber lines sometimes are attributed.

The 55-57 disc brake kit does not work with all 14” wheels but being of the 1975 vintage does help. Most of the 14” wheels that were disc brake compatible utilized a 10 ½ or 10 ¾ rotor for that little extra clearance. This kit uses 11” rotors and with the thickness of the mag wheels you will need to take a measurement of the I.D. of the wheel in the area of the rotor and caliper. The 11” rotor and approximately 1 3/8” protrusion beyond the rotor for the caliper nets about a 13 ¾” need for the I.D. of your wheel.

This kit upgrades your Tri 5 Chevy to disc brakes. Goes on original spindles with no modification required. Will not clear some original 14” wheels that are not disc brake compatible. Some grinding to the steering arms may be required to achieve full turning radius and the kit increases track width by 7/8” per side for a total of 1 ¾”. All of the stock components from the spindle out will be removed prior to installing the disc brake kit.

This kit comes with 5 on 4-3/4 rotors. Some 14" wheels may not clear. THIS ROTOR IS ORIGINAL EQUIPMENT ON: 69-72 CHEVELLE/MONTE CARLO 69-74 NOVA 70-72 CUTLASS/442 69-72 GTO/LE MANS/GRAND PRIX 71-74 PONTIAC VENTURA

If your changing the brakes from standard to Disc would a brake booster be needed and possibly a longer rod. Any add-ons to make the system work better would be nice. Thanks

Part number 91031949 This kit eliminates the old ball bearings and offers superior stopping capability. Power brakes are not mandatory and with sufficient pedal ratio standard hydraulic brakes should be sufficient. We would recommend opting for a dual reservoir master cylinder in no larger than 1” for manual brakes. If you want the ultimate stopping power then power brakes would be the choice and we offer the combo number 91035556 for disc/drum or 91035557 for four wheel disc or four wheel drum. You will need to have 18-20 inches of vacuum available to the booster to achieve full power assist. If that is not available an optional 12 volt vacuum pump would be needed.

When you put modern disc brakes on your 1958-1964 Chevy full-size car (Bel-Air, Biscayne, Impala, 150 Series, 210 Series), you should update the master cylinder as well.
