What's in the Box

Front disc brakes provide a significant improvement in braking performance versus the drum brakes your car came with. This complete front disc brake conversion kit fits 1964-72 GM A-Body, 1967-69 GM F-Body and 1968-74 X-Body using your stock disc brake spindles or our new replacement stock height disc brake spindles # 910-34900.

Kit includes 11" diameter vented brake rotor with 5 on 4-3/4" wheel bolt pattern, '69-'77 GM style calipers (7/16"-20 inlets), caliper brackets, brake pads, backing plates, rubber brake lines, and all necessary bearings, seals and hardware for an easy, complete installation onto factory disc brake spindles.

Note:  Brake kit will not fit our 2" dropped spindles # 910-34906 or stock drum brake spindles. Must be used with stock style disc brake spindles and 15" diameter or larger wheels.

Application

Brake kit fits:

  • 1964-72 Chevelle, Malibu, El Camino
  • 1967-69 Camaro, Firebird
  • 1968-74 Nova, Ventura, Omega, Apollo
If you are going to use this kit on an A-Body Oldsmobile (Cutlass, 442), Pontiac (GTO, Lemans) or Buick (Skylark, GS), it will not directly bolt on to the original spindles even with grinding the .610" off the stud at the top. The lower bolt holes in the original spindles are 7/16" and the bracket and bolts 1/2". The upper bolt holes on the original spindles are 1/2" with the brackets and bolts being 5/8". You will need to replace or modify the spindles.

Notes

  1. Kit will not work with 14" wheels. Must be 15" wheels or larger.
  2. Kit must be used with original GM disc brake spindles our our new spindles # 910-34900. The difference between disc brake and drum brake spindles is at boss at the top where the barcket would mount. On drum brake spindles, this boss stuck out farther than disc brake spindles. Approximately .610" would have to be removed from this boss to work with these spindles.
  3. We recommend using brake booster/master cylinder combo 910-31978 with this front disc brake kit. Stock single reservoir 4-wheel drum brake master cylinders do not have the capacity to supply the proper amount of pressure for front disc brakes. Combo 910-31978 also includes an adjustable proportioning valve which is to be installed in the rear brake line circuit. The proportioning valve modulates pressure to the rear brakes which is necessary to prevent the rear brakes from locking up in an emergency stop situatiuon.

Perfect for existing disk rebuild

We used this kit to rebuild the front disc set up on a 72' Monte Carlo that had sat under a carport for over 10 years. The kit was complete and the service was fast. My 16 year old son and his buddy installed it with little supervision. One small bag of parts that I could have gotten at the parts store were missing but Speedway quickly replaced them no problem.

The hardest part of the whole project was getting someone to powder coat the spindles. Assembly was a breeze and the whole package fits under my 15" American Racing Rims. I could not be more pleased and recommend purchasing if you want some stopping power for a good price.

I'm thinking of using this kit on my 1969 fire bird, will it be a smooth conversion without having to modify anything ? the car has already been fitted with a dual master cylinder before I bought the car. Will this one work ok for the conversion as well ?

If your car originally had drums up front you will have to replace the spindles with ones for disc brakes. I think Speedway sells complete kits for the conversion without the master cylinder or you could just add spindles to this kit. My advice is to buy new ones not junkyard dogs as I learned the hard way.

If your Firebird has original drum brakes then you will also need new spindles which are part number 91034900 to make it a bolt together conversion. If it has original disc brakes then your stock spindles will work fine.

The big top bolt that retains the backing plate goes into a boss on the spindles. This boss needs to be machined down approximately 5/8” to allow the caliper bracket to sit square on the spindle. Also the lower bolt holes may not be the same diameter and either the spindle or the bracket can be drilled to accept the bigger bolts.

I am sorry, this disc brake kit will not fit your 1963 Chevy Nova. It fit's 64-72 Chevelle, 67-72 Camaro and Firebird, 68-74 Nova, Ventura, Apollo. Speedway Motors does not offer a brake kit for your vehicle.

This kit will work on:64-72 GM Midsize (Chevelle) 67-72 Camaro and Firebird 68-74 Nova,Ventura,Apollo It can be installed on drum brake spindles on these vehicles by milling off .610 of the upper boss that retained the backing plate and in some cases drilling and threading the same boss deeper for caliper bracket attachment. To use on a different year as an example the earlier 63-67 Nova would require different bearings and brackets for proper caliper to rotor alignment. You may want to check with other suppliers for the earlier kit.

Part # 91031958 If converting to disc brakes the original spindle could be used but it would require modification. The upper threaded boss for the backing plate bolt would need to be machined or ground down .610” to allow the caliper bracket to position properly. Or you can use our new disc brake spindles number 91034900 and at that point everything would be a bolt in project. If the rest of the brake system is original we suggest some changes to the plumbing so the front brakes are full pressure and direct from the master cylinder and in the line to the rear to plumb in an adjustable proportioning valve such as part number 91031353. When adjusted properly this will ensure even stopping front to rear under panic braking.

These spindles allow you to easily and affordably convert your stock drum front brakes to the original style GM front disc brakes. These new replacement forged steel disc brake spindles fit GM A-body, F-body and X-body passenger cars. These spindles are stock height, not dropped.

The primary difference between disc brake spindles and drum brake spindles is the thickness of the upper mount boss. The upper boss is 5/8" thicker on drum brake spindles than on the disc brake spindles. Spindles work well with Speedway disc brake kit 910-31958.
