What's in the Box

Adapt GM/Chevy T-5 transmission to 1932-48 Ford or 1939-50 Mercury engines. Allows use of your early Ford clutch release shaft and fork.

This Kit contains a Ford style throwout bearing that requires a Ford long style pressure plate (three finger). Such as Part #'s 9101565191015657, or 91015635

Kit includes aluminum adapter, original Flathead style release bearing, throwout bearing return spring, adapter sleeves, and ball-bearing type pilot bearing.

Installation Notes (PDF)

Notes

  1. This adapter contains four 1/2"-20 threaded holes to mount the transmission case to the adapter. The bolt sizes on a T-5 transmission case are not consistant. In order for your T-5 to work with this adapter, you may be required to enlarge the four bolt holes in the case of your transmission so that they accept 1/2"-20 bolts.
  2. A return spring tab (normally found on an original Flathead transmission) is not included.

Great addition to a flathead V8

September 06, 2014
Product is good but make sure you read the warning in red in the catalog with this product. There are clearance problems with clutch pressure plates greater than 9". The pressure plate weights might hit the adapter but it is not obvious until the engine is running. Also check the clearances of the input shaft into the pilot bushing and the and the clearance between the transmission snout to the clutch disk.
Pros:
  • makes flathead a better driver
Cons:
  • some fit issues.
Yes, I recommend this product.

We apologize but this bell housing adapter does not have a provision for spring hook up. This is up to the customer and dependent upon the clutch set up they are using and what they can fabricate to best serve your needs.

The new pilot bearing in the kit should be correct fit for your T5. The adapter sleeve/sleeves could be used with a different or original pilot for correct fit. Always check the pilot on the transmission with the bearing to insure proper fit before assembly.

The transmission pattern is for GM T5 as well as Muncie and Saginaw. It measures 4 13/16" tall, 8 1/4" wide across the top and 9 1/8" across the bottom. These measurements are center to center of the bolt holes.

will this work on '48 Ford F1 ? There's some confusion on which engine was actually used since it appears to be a '49 type engine (has thermo's in the front of engine) have to check on bell houseing but i believe it is the 8BA pattern, what would be the correct adapter to use ?

The Flathead V8 had part of an integral bell housing cast on the block. The 49 and up did not, they looked more like the later v8’s. If you have the later adapter number 91628928 you will also need the short 3” bell housing adapter that was common to the pickups to use between the adapter and the block. We apologize but currently this 3” adapter bell housing is not offered. If you have a Ford T5 we offer bell housing number 91027031 to go directly to the 49 to 53 block.

Part number 91628928 will bolt to your 46-48 block where the bell housing is part of the block. It will allow use of your original clutch shaft and arm. It does include the new Flathead style throw out bearing that will require the use of a 3 fingered pressure plate. The T 5 will bolt to the adapter and the kit also includes the new pilot bearing and spacer sleeves.

Trans adapter This adapter will fit a 49 8ba motor using the 8ba existing bell housing? Is it correct that I can use existing Ford clutch parts... existing flywheel & throw bearing & fork as long as its not an 11" clutch & pressure plate. the only part that I will have to change is the clutch disc and pilot bearing? the existing starter motor will still fit?

Adapter number 91628928 can be used on the 49 and up flathead but requires the OEM 3” adapter bell housing. If used on the earlier flatheads no 3” bell housing is required. It will accept the original clutch shaft, fork, and release bearing and the kit comes with a new release bearing and pilot bearing. All you need to get is the correct clutch disc and re use your original pressure plate or we offer new pressure plates in the 3 finger style to mate with the flathead style throw out bearing.

Adapter number 91628928 is for the 32-48 Ford engines and 48 and up truck or 49 to 53 car require the use of the 3” adapter bell housing available at Flathead restoration suppliers such as Dick Spadaro or Navarro.

Most common years were 88 thru mid to late 90’s as they are readily available at salvage yards and swap meets. There were some other years but some had a different degree of mount pattern and put the transmission in at an angle when bolted to the adapter.
