High-torque, 1-1/2 HP high output motors and gear reduction drive design spins the engine over faster, with 50% more cranking torque and LESS amp draw than a stock starter! Compact, offset design gives more header and chassis clearance. Perfect for high compression or supercharged Chevy engines.

Chevy Mini Starter

March 11, 2015
Very difficult to shim the starter so that it will disengage when the engine starts. In fact, I could never get the starter to disengage from the flex plate. This is the second one I have purchased; the first unit I ended up selling at a swap meet as it had the same problem as this unit.
Pros:
  • Low Price
Cons:
  • doesn't fit/work properly
No, I would not recommend this product.

Pros:
  • WOrks good
Cons:
  • sounds weird
Yes, I recommend this product.

Good value.

June 18, 2014
I've been using this starter for about 2 weeks and it is a huge improvement over the stock starter (1969 Chevy C10). It turns over the engine much faster. Installation was a snap due to the smaller size and having the ability to clock the motor relative to the mounting plate.
Yes, I recommend this product.

Which bolt holes w/ 168T flexplate and how do I know if I need shims About to order a starter to use with my 168T flexplate. I don't see anything in the instructions as to what bolt holes shall be utilized. My current starter is staggered but the block is tapped for the straight across pattern. Also how can I test to see if I will need starter shims prior to installation?

Use the bolt holes that shift the starter away from the block. Note you may need to rotate the starter housing to rotate the solenoid away from the block - easy to do, follow the instructions. To check for shim needs install the starter, pull out the gear with a pliers and use a piece of flat steel to hold the gear out. Use a feeler gauge (or standard paper clip as it is the correct thickness) to measure clearance. Follow the specs provided.

For a 168 tooth flex plate you will have to use the set of bolt holes that is closest to the oil pan. That would be the bolt hole that has the notch in it on the aluminum block and then the corresponding bolt hole on the other side of the aluminum block. It will be readily apparent which set of holes to use when you hold it up to the engine. This starter will only work with the straight across bolt pattern on the engine. There is no way to determine how many shims you may need before installing the starter. You will need to bolt the starter to the engine and then pull the pinion gear out to check the engagement to the ring gear.

Exact compression limitations for this starter are not specified. In my experience it will handle 11:1 compression small blocks fairly easily. If you are dealing with an engine over 400 ci that is above 12:1 compression I would opt for the 2.0 kw version.

Ignition Diode, 10 Amp
(Part #91067415)

If your engine continues to run even when the ignition is turned "off" you are experiencing engine "Run-On." This usually only occurs on older vehicles with an external voltage regulator. Because the ignition box receives power directly from the battery, it does not require much current to keep the unit energized. If you are experiencing run-on, it is due to a small amount of voltage going through the charging lamp indicator and feeding the small Red wire even if the key is turned off. This resistor can be put in-line to the ignition box's small Red wire and will keep voltage from leaking through to the unit.

  • The load should be attached to the threaded end of the diode
