What's in the Box

High-torque, 1-1/2 HP high output motors and gear reduction drive design spins the engine over faster, with 50% more cranking torque and LESS amp draw than a stock starter! Compact, offset design gives more header and chassis clearance. Perfect for high compression or supercharged Chevy engines.

Straight mount 6061-T6 aluminum mounting plates work with 153 or 168 tooth flywheels on Chevy V8 or 90° V6. Works on blocks with angle bolt starter flange by drilling and tapping one hole.

Great little starter. Fixed my cranking problem.

December 23, 2015
OEM starter would not turn over my rebuilt 350 chevy with 10.5:1 compression. This one turned it over slower but started fine. It also sounds great when cranking.
Pros:
  • Easy To Mount Too
Cons:
  • None so far
Yes, I recommend this product.

Decent product for decent price.

August 10, 2015
As it says this starter is a decent product for a decent price. I use on a dirt track race car and works good enough. With the heat of the engine and getting full of oil and dirt it lasts for a year or two which is all I ask.
Yes, I recommend this product.

Not enough clearance to clear flexplate.

May 27, 2015
Need to return the one I got. The holes drilled through the plate the one towards the block wasn't drilled offset so even with shims it didn't have enough clearance to get behind the flex plate. Had another used one on the shelf to bolt on at the shop.
Cons:
  • doesn't fit
No, I would not recommend this product.

Use the bolt holes that shift the starter away from the block. Note you may need to rotate the starter housing to rotate the solenoid away from the block - easy to do, follow the instructions. To check for shim needs install the starter, pull out the gear with a pliers and use a piece of flat steel to hold the gear out. Use a feeler gauge (or standard paper clip as it is the correct thickness) to measure clearance. Follow the specs provided.

For a 168 tooth flex plate you will have to use the set of bolt holes that is closest to the oil pan. That would be the bolt hole that has the notch in it on the aluminum block and then the corresponding bolt hole on the other side of the aluminum block. It will be readily apparent which set of holes to use when you hold it up to the engine. This starter will only work with the straight across bolt pattern on the engine. There is no way to determine how many shims you may need before installing the starter. You will need to bolt the starter to the engine and then pull the pinion gear out to check the engagement to the ring gear.

Exact compression limitations for this starter are not specified. In my experience it will handle 11:1 compression small blocks fairly easily. If you are dealing with an engine over 400 ci that is above 12:1 compression I would opt for the 2.0 kw version.

I have a new/unused 910-67440 Compact Starter Motor that came as part of a project car. I installed it on a 327 Chevy engine. I had to install the internal shims to get the correct clearance between starter pinion and flex plate gear. Problem when I crank the engine (its on a stand,) the pinion does not automatically disengage the flex plate. Is this normal, does it only disengage when the engine starts or does it need more clearance?

Yes it is common for the starter pinion to stay engaged when cranking the engine without it firing. Once the engine fires and the flex plate starts spinning faster than the starter is cranking then the pinon will disengage. I have observed this same thing before on a start stand and was also concerned, however as soon as the engine started the starter pinion retracted like it is supposed to.
