Exactly what I wanted!

June 07, 2016
I purchased this to use for the brake system in a custom streetrod. The vehicle used 4-piston front brakes and dual piston rear brakes. The original booster/cylinder type from the donor car was obscenely expensive and would have needed a lot of custom tweeting. This bolted (almost) right up and fits the bill nicely. Thank you for offering a "universal" quality product with such good quality!
Pros:
  • Small Package Size
  • Well Machined
Yes, I recommend this product.

Speedway part number 91031409. This brake booster and master cylinder would work fine on a Disc/Drum application. I would recommend using the 1" bore master cylinder and make sure to use a proportioning valve like our 91031353 to adjust your brake bias.

This booster/master cylinder is NOT a direct bolt on in place of an original non boosted brake system. The bolt pattern for the booster is 3 3/8” vertical and horizontal so fabrication or modification would be required. We offer a master cylinder conversion plate under part number 91031402 that may be of interest in the switch over. You will need to have 18-20 inches of vacuum available at the booster to achieve full power assist and advise a simple vacuum check before ordering. If insufficient vacuum is available we do offer our 12 volt pump under part number 91028146 to remedy the problem. With sufficient vacuum pedal pressure requirement to stop the car will be substantially lower provided the rest of the brake system is in good condition with properly bled components.

These combination master cylinder and boosters fit many applications. The bolt pattern for the booster is 3 3/8” both horizontal and vertical center to center. Master cylinder available in 1” or 1 1/8” depending on application. You will also need a Clevis for the end of the threaded push rod for attachment to the pedal such as part number 91002973. Verify following dimensions for fit to your application: 7" Booster Specs: * Pushrod-to-mounting flange is 5-1/2" * Four bolts on 3-3/8" centers * Booster is 3.75" thick * Master cylinder combo is 11.875" from end of the master cylinder to the firewall Master Cylinder Specs: * (4) qty 3/8"-24 outlet ports (2 plugs included) * 8" from mount to outer edge

This master cylinder/booster works on many applications including the late 60’s and up GM cars and trucks. The bolt pattern for the booster is 3 3/8” center to center vertical and horizontal both. The master cylinder is offered in 1” bore for disc/drum applications or 1 1/8” for four wheel disc brakes. You may also need a clevis to complete the hook up to your pedal such as part number 91002973.

In ordering our master cylinder/booster kits you have the choice of 1” bore or 1 1/8” bore. One inch bore is recommended and applicable to a 4 wheel drum or a disc/drum application. 1-1/8” bore is generally used for a 4 wheel disc brake set up but is NOT mandatory. Going to a 1 1/8” bore master will cut down on pedal travel but also increase the amount of pedal pressure that will be required. Without the power assist the 1 1/8” bore master cylinder would require more pedal pressure on a normal set up than desired and customers may have a hard time stopping their vehicle. Main concern going to a power brake system is the available vacuum from the engine. The manufacturers require a minimum 18-20 inches of vacuum available at the booster to get the power assist desired. Hot rod engines with radical cams may experience a loss of vacuum and in this case the customer would need to either go with manual brakes or add an additional 12 volt vacuum pump in order to get the appropriate vacuum for power brakes.

The Brake booster/Master cylinder combo, part number: 91031409, will work with drum/drum brake. Use a I" bore for this application. You may also need additional items such as residual valves and adjust brake pedal ratio when switching from manual to power brakes.
