easy install and highest quality

September 27, 2013
Extremely well thought out for the '55-57 Chev suspension making the install a billion times easier than fighting with the stock springs. Using tubular control arms top and bottom make for a great front system and the adjustability factor can't be compared with the factory pieces. And, the visual impact is stunning.
Yes, I recommend this product.

This product actually does what it says

March 04, 2013
I have a 1965 Chevelle that was giving me fits with front tire rub. I was considering putting on different coil springs but did''nt know which ones to use and I wanted to do it right the first time. I saw the QA1 coil overs and read about them being a bolt-on product so I wanted to give them a try. They were easy to install and make my old Chevelle handle like a sports car! This product actually does what it says. Good job QA1 for a great product......
Yes, I recommend this product.

What a difference

May 18, 2012
I bought these shocks because it seemed like the easiest way to raise the front about an inch which I needed due to the wheel tire combo I am using. I had dropped spindles, dropped springs and a heavy BBC which made it too low, Installing the shocks per the supplied instructions was easy enough. Adjusted the height and then turned the adjustment know 6 clicks, I couldnt believe the handling difference just from a pair of shocks. Hit the railroad tracks at 60 and sail right over, grat stability. Come on Goodguys autocross, here we come.
Pros:
  • Quality stuff
Yes, I recommend this product.

Yes, the only thing you have to do is knock out the two lower shock attachment nuts and drill the holes to 3/8". You're gonna love the ease of the install.

Coil over kit number 72146731 is designed to work with the stock or aftermarket control arms with the stock specifications. Minimal modifications to the control arms are required and normally opening up the pocket for the shock to clear is the comment we hear from customers.

Just put on a pair (they come two shocks/springs in the kit) here in Ft Worth and I'm guessing you're asking installed height as the diameter doesn,t change. The instructions advise installing with the spring at max length, then after bolted down, the adjust compression up approx 1/3 of the shock body and lower the car to see if it needs up/down additional adjustment. I can't give you my measurements as I'm doing a frame off so there's no real weight on it yet, just bare frame and engine. Be sure to get the roller bearing kit for the spring base and use the anti-seize as QA1 recommends.

These coil over kits are designed to work on the 1964 to 67 GM A body cars. If experiencing too low of ride height it is possible the spring rate is not high enough. Most Small Blocks require a 450 spring rate and by going to the 550 you are upping the carrying capacity by about 200 pounds. One thing to verify before switching springs is the mounted length on the shock. This shock is 15” extended and 10.5” compressed and needs to be mounted at ride height at approximately 11”. To achieve this mount length the adjuster ring for the coil should be about ¼ to 1/3 up the adjuster threads. If you have the 11” mount length and adjuster is in that range then the control arms in use will need to be altered for shock mount location.

You would need the 550lb spring. The spring rate doesn't control ride height as much as ride quality and feel. The body of the shock is threaded to allow you to adjust the ride height.

Most Big Block Chevelle's have a total front end weight of 1951-2200 lbs. If equipped with Air Conditioning, add 75 lbs. I recommend using a 550 lb spring rate. To lower the car you can adjust the coilover shock to a lower spring height. If this does not lower the car to the desired height you can use a 450 lb spring and adjust the height accordingly. Here is the spring rates recommended for your cars front end weight. Spring Rate Front End Weight 350 1700-1900 lb. 450 1900-2100 lb. 550 2100-2300 lb.

I just bought a set of the QA1 coil overs for my 57 Chevy. It has a new ZZ427 Crate Engine in it. I took the shocks out and put one of them together enough to put the rod through the top hole so I could put the bushings and nut on, but the rod does not protrude above the spring. I watched a video on installation. My question is, do you take the the clip ring off of the top of the shock to let the rod move up?

I have some things for you to check out. You should not need to remove the snap ring from the shaft. First make sure the shock is fully extended. When fully extended you should measure 4 1/2 inches from the snap ring to the top of the black collar on the top of the shock body. At times I have had trouble getting the shock into position without hitting something as I pushed the shock up into position, which would cause the shaft to be pushed down into the shock. Once the shock is in position you may have to put a jack under the lower control arm to compress the spring enough to get the bushing, washer and nut installed. Now complete the assembly as the instructions describe.

For your Chevelle with a small block we would suggest the 350 spring rate for a better ride or 450 spring rate for better handling.

These coilovers can typically be adjusted for up to 2" lower than stock ride height. If you want to drop the front end lower than that you will need drop spindles as well.

The T bar on this shock is 3/4" OD so the bushing would require a 3/4" bolt. QA1 also offers a bushing with a 5/8" ID. Their part number for that bushing is 9032-106 but I am sorry at this time we do not offer that bushing. The springs for these are available individually as part number 72110477.
