Q & A

What's in the Box

If you like traditional looks and reliable, modern performance, you’ll love this cool Flathead alternator. It has the look of an original generator, but is really a 6-volt, positive-ground alternator that produces 60 amps at idle and 75 amps going down the road. This 1-wire alternator is designed to fit 1949-1953 Ford & Mercury Cars and 1948-1953 Ford Trucks with Flathead V8s and features a simple one-wire hookup.

We offer it in black painted or polished aluminum, and both include stock-appearing mounting brackets (the stock fan carrier bolts to that bracket) and pulleys that accept wide 5/8” belts.

  • Easy one-wire hookup
  • 5/8" wide belt pulley included
  • If using 3/8" wide belt, order pulley # 91067178
  • Uses stock-appearing bracket and fan carrier bolts

If you are going to drill thru the case we would recommend disassembling the alternator before hand to eliminate particles getting into the internals. If just drilling partway in then tape off the cooling slots and openings to keep inside clean.

Altenater Details Will this bolt up without any modifications? I have an original truck and do not want to alter anything to make it fit. Does it include everything i need to bolt up ? Can i use existing belt ? What would i need to do to get original amp guage to work with this altenater or will it render guage useless? Thanks for your help. This is a 6 volt positive ground system using a generater at this time

This Powergen should be a direct bolt on for your 52 Ford pickup and works fine as it comes for positive ground. It will eliminate your regulator completely and will simply be one wire to the starter battery side or direct to the battery. Your fan carrier will bolt directly to the bracket and the only issue is your amp gauge which would normally hook to the regulator. It will take some rewiring due to this being a one wire alternator.

No this will not work as a negative ground. This is for 6 volt positive ground systems only.

If you like traditional looks and reliable, modern performance, you’ll love this cool Flathead 1-wire alternator. Plain 1946-1953 Flathead Alternator Bracket
(Part #91667910)

Just because you've got a vintage Flathead Ford V8 in your ride doesn't mean you're stuck with the antiquated charging system. Switching to a tried-and-true GM 1-wire alternator is a great upgrade for any Flathead-equipped vehicle with a 12-volt electrical system.

  • Bracket fits 1946-1953 V-8 engines
  • Heavy-duty steel construction
  • Can easily be painted to match your engine
  • Designed to work with the two narrow-belt drive system typical of late '50-'53 Ford/Mercury passenger cars
  • Will not work with single wide belts unless the alternator is modified (see Notes)

6-Volt Alternator for Wide 5/8 Inch Belt
(Part #91067168)

If you are still running the 6-volt system on your car, truck or even tractor, the generator is your weak point. Even at highway speed that old generator cannot put out enough to keep up with the lights, heater motor and radio. This alternator puts out 60 amps at 7.5 volts at highway speeds, up to 30 amps at idle, and has the regulator built in. It includes the required plug and can be installed on almost any engine by modifying or purchasing a new mounting bracket.

Powermaster 178 Black 3/8 Inch Wide Pulley for Powergen
(Part #91067178)
All Powergens come with a pulley for a 5/8" wide belt. If you plan on running a 3/8" wide belt, swap this pulley with the one already on your Powergen.
