What's in the Box

Info

Flame-Thrower II coils feature a super low 0.6 Ohm primary resistance which make them the ideal coil for Ignitor II ignition systems, Flame-Thrower billet distributors, as well as many other high energy ignitions. Low resistance and improved turns ratio help to produce up to 45,000 volts. This higher voltage enables you to run larger spark plug gaps for added power and better fuel economy.

These coils are also compatible with most capacitive discharge boxes.

Application

6 Volt application with 0.6 ohm resistance for 8 Cyl engines

12 Volt application with 0.32 - 0.6 ohm resistance for 4, 6, & 8 cylinder engines

We actually carry a Blaster II coil from MSD, part number 547 8202. The MSD coil has .7 Ohms of resistance built in. The Flamethrower II #447 45002 has .6 Ohms of resistance built-in. I’m sure that it would work in place of the MSD. I personally would use the MSD coil 547 8202 to protect the warranty on the MSD distributor.

Do I have to use a resistor for this coil or is it a true 12 volt coil?

This coil has .6 ohm primary resistance to match up to distributors and electronic conversions with that ohm requirement. For example our distributors number 44710070 and the same distributor for other applications require .6 ohm of resistance. If running a distributor or a conversion needing 1.5 ohm of resistance we would recommend coil number 44745001 which has the 1.5 ohm of resistance or the necessary ballast resistor.

The wire to use would be a 8mm. The length depends on where the coil is mounted relative to the distributor. The boots are standard style boots. Whether they are straight or angled boots depends on the clearance surrounding the components.

The coil cannot spark continuously because it has to break the circuit to charge the secondary windings to get full spark. On a flame thrower it takes as much spark as you can get so it needs to be switched on and off repeatedly as needed. In a points system the opening and closing of the points does this particular part of the scenario.
