Great mellow sound

March 04, 2014
Wanted to quiet down my exhaust system on my 47 Chevy streetrod for long trips. Have fenderwell headers, turbo mufflers and echo can tailpipe ends. These fit perfectly inside the cans and mellowed the sound just enough to where I can enjoy the sound system. Drilled and tapped cans for a set screw, and can remove if I want to. Saved me a trip to the muffler shop and a bigger expense Thank you..
Pros:
  • Great price
Yes, I recommend this product.

Product Q&A

5 questions : 7 answers

how effective are these at quieting exhaust ? I have a T bucket with a stock small block Ford 289 with 3-1/2 inch headers and I want to insert these into the extension pipes off the headers. How much of a reduction in exhaust noise can I expect to see? Anyone had any experience with these inserts? These will be the only thing used to quiet the exhaust, is it going to be enough?

they worked good for me. I added 2- 3.5 inch tailpipes out passed the rear end and made it a lot quieter.

These do a decent job of quieting the exhaust down considering the small amount of space they take up. I would compare these to the noise level of these to a car or pickup with an aftermarket performance exhaust system. These certainly don't quiet it down to a stock vehicle exhaust noise level.

Sorry I do not have these in a 2.5" version.

Can these be used in the 20 inch extensions? Can these be used in the 20 inch extensions? I want the additional muffling, but not the extra 6 inches on the exhaust. One review on the 20 inch extension mufflers said they were a bit on the loud side, and I really need to quiet the car some. Thanks, John

It may be possible to slip these partially into the collector to be able to use them with a 20" extension. Be sure you have at least 12 5/8" of straight length counting the collector and extension to be sure. I wouldn't expect a big difference in noise reduction though. You will have to modify the muffler insert and/or design your own if you want it to be quiet.

which direction do the louvers/slits in the muffler point? away from the exhaust flow I assume?

The muffler for the 16" extensions have two distinctive ends. A rounded nose end and a end with a sharp edge. To install in the header extension, simply install the rounded end of muffler into the extension and tap it in until it is completely past the bell mouthed portion of extension. The foil packing is to remain on muffler. The muffler can be installed backwards but will burn out sooner and be noiser.
