A distributor’s performance is only as good as its drive gear. MSD Ignition has put a great deal of effort into researching and testing a variety of metallurgical compositions, heat treating and coatings to provide you with a durable, accurate and strong distributor gear. MSD engineers have built test fixtures and spent hundreds of hours testing and evaluating the metallurgy of these gears. The result is a special iron alloy gear that is treated to a low-friction coating process. To you this means long life, an easy break-in period and reliable performance!

Msd distributor gear.

This gear is for msd distributors only with the .500 inch shaft most all other distributors have smaller shafts so be sure to order the correct one for your application. This gear works well and shows very little wear after one season of racing also keep in mind only run the iron gear on flat tappet cams you must run a bronze gear with a roller cam.

distributor gear I am using a 1992 vortec small block chevy (350) in a 79 off road jeep swap. I am going to used the HEI chevrolet distributor after changing the intake from tbi to carb. Do I need to change the distributor gear to melonized? Or can I run stock gear? Thank you

Many factory roller cams will accept a steel gear but to verify you won’t lose the cam we recommend a melanized gear or roller cam specified gear for the distributor.

No the 8531 - MSD Steel Distributor Gear, Chevy, Item #: 5478531, will not work for you. The Chevy HOT cam uses a normalized iron distributor gear that does not require a bronze gear. That means that you should be able to use your stock distributor gear.
