Q & A

What's in the Box

Tire hardness has a huge affect on your car's performance. A tire too hard won't bite and a tire too soft may wear quickly or even ball up. Also tire hardness changes during its life cycle. To run your best you must keep track of all your tire's hardnesses. This easy-to-use tool will help you do just that - quickly, accurately & easily.

  • Reads from 0-100 points
  • Comes with pouch

Notes

For the most consistent results rock the durometer from angled back past straight up to angled forward. The pointer will move up to the highest (true) reading, then back down. Record the highest reading reached. The durometer must have a rectangular base to do this properly. If you just push straight down you may get inconsistent and inaccurate results.

When is a tire too hard to drive in the rain? On my 1965 Buick Skylark (Chevy powered), that I only drove summers, I found that even though there was a lot of tread on the tires, the traction in the rain was really bad. A newer tire cured the problem. I'd like to buy a tire durometer but I need to know when is a tire too hard for use in wet weather?

Sorry we don't have any good rule of thumb for determining how hard is too hard for wet roads. Your best bet would be to check the tires when new, then once you notice decreased performance in wet conditions note the hardness at that point.

The surface of a tire becomes harder with every heat cycle and even new tires of the same compound can vary a great deal in hardness. If a tire is too soft for the track, it will overheat and may not last the entire race, but if it is too hard, it will not get up to the optimum temperature and traction will be sacrificed. Intercomp's Tire Durometer enables you to make the correct tire selections for any track.
