Q & A

What's in the Box

LizardSkin is a revolutionary product that can lower the interior temperature of a vehicle from 25 to 30 degrees. With only a .040" thick application, LizardSkin can also lower the interior noise level by 10 - 12 decibels by forming a 100% sealed seamless membrane over 100% of the car's interior. LizardSkin can also be used on the exterior of a vehicle and when used in wheel wells it reduces the chance of starring from thrown rocks. Since it is impervious to moisture after drying,  it helps to seal the surface to which it is applied.

Sold in two-gallon buckets. Each covers 45-50 sq. ft. at 0.040" thickness dry. Add their Sound Control, also a spray-on, water-based product, and dramatically reduce interior noise even more.

  • Class A fire-rated
  • Environmentally friendly solution
  • Provides non-combustible thermal insulation
  • Eliminates cut and paste waste
  • Able to withstand temperatures up to 500°F
  • Adheres to most any material
  • Continuous protective moisture barrier
  • One-part coating system
  • Lightweight (around 0.1 lbs/ft2)
  • No respirator needed; but dust mask/protective eyewear is recommended
  • Easy spray-on application
  • Can be easily applied to irregular surfaces and geometries
  • Offers a protective, seamless membrane
  • Fast clean up with soap and water

Notes

How much do I need?

  1. Measure length and width of all surfaces to be coated accounting for all curves and irregular shapes.
  2. Multiply length times width to get your total square footage.
  3. Divide total Ceramic Insulation square footage by 25 to calculate gallons needed.
  4. Round up to the next gallon to account for any square footage calculation errors.

Example:

  • 14 ft times 7 ft equals 98 sq. ft.
  • Then 98 sq. ft. divided by 25 equals 3.92 gallons
  • By rounding 3.92 up to 4, you will need four gallons of Ceramic Insulation

Preparing Surfaces:

LizardSkin coatings must be applied to a clean, dry surface that is free from rust and corrosion. For bare steel surfaces, a primer with at least 15% elongation is required. All other types of substrates do not require a primer. LizardSkin can be applied without scuffing to a newly primed metal surface.

If existing primer or paint has been on the substrate for more than 5-7 days, the surface needs to be cleaned and scuffed to allow for good mechanical adhesion. For aluminum, stainless, fiberglass and wood, the surface needs to be cleaned and scuffed prior to the application of LizardSkin. Mask off any areas that you don’t want coated.

Good product!

September 08, 2014
I've used this several times over the years on the bottom side and inside under dash on c1 corvettes. It hides the small imperfections on bottom side looks nice, and does give some heat resistance. Works best with there paint gun! Good product! Hard to clean up! Better have a gallon of acetone or be prepared to throw your paint gun away!
Yes, I recommend this product.

Love this stuff.

March 25, 2012
Product works great and installs easily. I didn't play with air pressure much to adjust the finish. My truck cab definitely sounds dense when tapped now. I installed 3 gallons of sound control and 3 gallons of insulation control on my crewcab.
Pros:
  • Easy To Install
  • Works well
Yes, I recommend this product.

I bought this product twice

December 04, 2010
I used this product on my Willys pickup rebuild, the inside and outside of the firewall along with the entire inside of the cab were coated. The truck has not been hot inside and the sound deading is tremendous. Easy to apply and clean up, I just wish they would sell in smaller quantity.
Yes, I recommend this product.

Lizard Skin seals the surface and is moisture proof after drying. It is used as undercoating as well in fender wells and underbody areas. Applying bed liner over the top for more protection may work but there may not be a chemical cross link to make the two adhere to each other. This would best be answered by Lizard Skin direct by phone or email and likely you will need to know the composition of the bed liner you are intending to use. If there is no cross link for adhesion the liner would likely start to peel from the Lizard Skin in a short time.

This can be used on wheel wells and underbody to create a water proof membrane along with reducing temperature from the road and the exhaust system from entering the passenger compartment. On wheel wells it helps prevent starring on the fenders from rock and road debris. It can be used on inside the body also as a water proof, temperature, and sound barrier. It only takes .040 thickness to achieve big benefits. We also offer the spray gun under part number 91044055 for ease of application.

Before applying, it is recommended to make sure surface is clean and dry, free of oil, dirt, water and rust. Then tape and paper off any areas for surfaces that you don't want bead splatter to land (i.e., glass, dash, hinges, door-locks, window mechanisms or body panels). All prep-work will be included in the instructions of this item.

The Lizard skin ceramic insulation is intended for use on vehicle interiors, and wheel wells, etc. There shouldn't be any reason it would not work on your steel garage door as long as you follow the same prep instructions as if you were painting it onto automotive sheet metal.

LizardSkin 50125 Super Pro Application Kit
(Part #91044055)

The SuperPro Application Kit is made exclusively for LizardSkin coatings, able to handle the thick viscosity of the coatings with ease. It provides exactly what’s needed for professionals and hobbyists to properly apply the coatings. Sprayers used for typical paint applications are not engineered to handle the thickness of these technologically advanced coatings. Both LizardSkin coatings must be applied to a clean, dry and rust-free surface. Applying both coatings is a snap, without the tedious labor of cutting and pasting that traditional mat products require. Simply hook up the sprayer to shop air and spray your way to a cooler and quieter ride.

Included in the kit:

  • Sprayer
  • 1 Quart Cup
  • Stir Paddle (attaches to drill)
  • Application Instructions
  • Wet Mil Gauge
LizardSkin 50115 Sound Control, 2 Gallon
(Part #91044052)

LizardSkin Sound Control is a spray-applied automotive sound damping coating that is great for reducing exterior noises and enhancing sound systems. It is an advanced, water-based composition of a high-grade acrylic binder with sound-damping particles.

Sound Control is used by custom car, street rod, truck builders and anyone else who wants to reduce unwanted noise and/or enhance the sound of their high end audio systems. It is best applied by the SuperPro Application Kit to a clean and dry, rust-free surface. For maximum acoustic performance in your ride, encapsulate the entire interior and all appropriate exterior surfaces.

Since Sound Control not only dampens noise, but also protects surfaces, it will help keep the integrity of your ride intact for years. The coating can withstand temperatures to 300° F. One 2 gallon container of LizardSkin Sound Control will cover 40-45 sq. ft. at 0.040” thickness dry.
