Spindle Identification Guide (GIF)

Application

  1. Ford 1928-48 spindles are generally your best choice when using an original Ford axle or an aftermarket I-beam axle.
  2. Chevy 1949-54 spindles are specifically designed for use on tube axles. A shorter, thicker axle stub makes this a slightly stronger spindle ideal for use with heavier street rods.

Ford kit features:

  • 1928-48 Ford Spindles
    • One piece forged 4140 steel
    • Modeled after the 1937-41 round-back design
    • Standard king pins fit to spindles
  • Speedway 11" Brake Kit
    • 11" vented iron rotor, 1" thick
    • 5 x 4-1/2" or 5 x 4-3/4" bolt patterns
    • Wheel studs - 1/2" Fine (4-1/2" BP), 7/16" Fine (4-3/4" BP)
    • Hub flange (hat) diameter - 6-1/4"
    • GM Metric '78-'88 calipers, 2-1/2" piston
    • 7/16" banjo bolt to AN-3 line adapter kit
  • Traditional or Cross Steering Kit
    • Flat plate steering arms
    • 5/8" tie rod steering link
    • 5/8" standard heim joint rod ends
    • Seals-it 5/8" rod end seals

Notes

Cross Steering vs. Traditional Steering

Traditional steering provides an original, period look, but will only work in these applications:

  • Four bar setup with '68-'73 Mustang box
  • Split wishbone or hairpin radius rod with reversed Corvair or '48-'56 Ford Puckup steering box
  • Parallel Steering Set-Up Guide (GIF)

Cross steering (using a Vega box) is the preferred method for nearly all cross spring, beam axle suspensions. Ford used this design from 1935-on.

  • Less bumpsteer
  • More comfortable steering column angle
  • Frees up foot pedal / bellhousing room
  • Cleaner vehicle profile
  • Cross Steering Guide (GIF)

This chrome kit should have the calipers and caliper bracket chromed, and the rubber brake lines should have been stainless steel. If you buy a chrome setup, you want everything you can see be chromed.

Complete Kit time saver

October 15, 2011
No instructions included with my kit but you can call them. My kit had a few extra parts (nuts bolts) and I am not sure why they don't just save us a step by putting the right rear race in and having to waste the one you take out. Overall a nice kit and fairly priced.
No, I would not recommend this product.

If you get the 5 on 4 ½ bolt pattern it would have the ½ x 20 lug studs as compared to the GM at 7/16” studs. With that size of rim and tire the more appropriate question is what the total vehicle weight will be as most of the front axle kits are for up to 2500 pounds.

Model A axles vary in drop and length and the heim on the bottom of the flat arm may be enough and in some cases the arm needs to be bent down in addition. Another option would be the dropped steering arms in kit number 9133948 and the arms are tapered from both sides so the tie rod and drag link can come in from the bottom. If still not enough drop you could opt for the 3 ¾” drop or change arms around and run the tie rod and drag link on top of the wishbones. This would depend on the design of your application.

Any 48” wide I beam axle kit will work with the steering and brake kit 9133902 such as 91639531 or 91639533. On the other I beam axle kits in 46 and 47 if we substitute in a 48” axle and the correct spring length the kit will also work.

A 48” axle kit with the steering and brake kit mentioned nets a 56 1/4” track width which is hub face to hub face where the wheels will bolt on. So if running full fenders you can measure fender lip to fender lip and subtract the 56 1/4" and the total would be the space allowed. Fat fendered cars will have more room for a wider and deeper wheel as compared to the early Model A’s thru 34 vehicles.

Kit number 91031945 with the 5 on 4 1/2" bolt pattern does not require swapping of the inner bearing race in the rotor. Kit number 91031946 uses a GM rotor for 5 on 4 3/4" bolt pattern and this rotor requires changing the inner race with the one included in the kit.

With your 50.5" axle our brake kit will give you 58 3/4" hub to hub. This kit will work with your wider axle except for the drag link. You will need a longer drag link for your wider axle.

First are you trying to use the stock axle and spring set up. if so it will all depend on the spindles and king pins. but if you're swapping out the whole front end then the inclination shouldn't be a problem. Most of the cars in the 20s and early 30s didn't have much front end adjustment so most plowed like a dump truck anyway. You can always adjust the axle with the radius rods to give the whole axle more incline or caster. I would check the chevy type spindles they may give you more of the incline you are looking for. I used the ford spindles on my 1931 A Model Ford I also have a 1949 Chevy fleetline deluxe street rod. finished and driving the A Model in the building stage

The Ford steering and brake kit number 9133902 includes the spindles that will work on the 28-48 Ford axles 48” wide but will not work on your Graham Paige without extensive machine work to your axle. The pin diameter along with the camber built into the axle is different.
