This carb works great!

September 30, 2013
Bought one to replace an worn out Quadrajet on my 71 Nova. Car starts much easier and runs better. Looks great too. I liked it so much that I bought another one to replace an ailing Holley 4011 on my 72 Blazer.
Pros:

Car runs great!

September 26, 2013
The Carter on my car was in serious need of a factory rebuild (after 50 years). Just a kit wouldn't do. This was a simpler and less expensive way to go - and I am getting better mileage. I am running this on a 425 Nailhead and it runs great.
Pros:
  • simple.
Yes, I recommend this product.

Bad Float right from box

September 22, 2012
Installed a 1407 on my '58 no problems at all. Installed a 1406 on my son's truck and had immediate flooding problems. After going through it to ensure no dirt or debris, found a float was full of gas. Frustrating to say the least. Re-used a float out of the old Holley to get it to work right. Probably voided the warranty as soon as I opened it up to solve the problem. Realy like Speedway Motors and will definately do business again. This is a reflection on Edelbrock lack of quality control.
Pros:
  • Simple installation
No, I would not recommend this product.

This Edelbrock Performer carburetor is essentially an all new Carter AFB carburetor. Edelbrock acquired the rights to build the AFB carburetors from Carter and now they are labeled with the Edelbrock brand name. The air cleaner on your AFB should go right on this carburetor without issue.

Idle Adjustment I purchased this carb and have not been able to reduce the low speed idle below 1000 RPM's. I have adjusted the fast idle and once the vehicle warms up, is driven, and I come to a stop, the vehicle Is idling around 1100 rpm's. The idle adjustment is backed all the way out and no more adjustment is left in the set screw. I have checked vacuum lines and choke. It appears the throttle plates at the bottom of the carb are not closing all the way or at least being able to close enough to reduce the idle. I am out of thoughts on this and wonder if this is a problem you have seen. Do I need a new Carb, this is brand new and I need the idle to come down as I still have to advance the timing more, which will further increase the idle speed.

If you are not able to get the idle go any lower by adjusting the idle screw then your throttle cable or throttle linkage may be holding the throttle arm from rotating further. To determine if this is the issue remove the throttle cable/linkage from the carburetor and start the engine. Let the engine warm up to operating temperature and set the idle to your desired level. Next re-connect the throttle cable. If there is a change in idle speed then the cable is your issue. To fix the problem you will need to move the mount that holds the throttle cable on the carburetor end closer to the throttle linkage. On many aftermarket cables this is adjustable with two nuts and can be done by simply loosening the nuts and repositioning the cable within the bracket.

If your car goes in reverse without issues but when in forward it does not want to move then your issue is probably not the carburetor, it could very possibly be in the transmission. You may want to have a local mechanic that is familiar with these carburetors take a look at the vehicle while it is still together and running, then have him completely disassemble and check over the carburetor to make sure it is correct.

If fuel mileage is the only concern then typically smaller is better, however I would be pretty surprised if there is more than 1/2 MPG difference between the 500 CFM and 600 CFM Edelbrock carbs if both are optimum tuned for mileage on your particular engine. I suggest a 600 CFM if the engine is fairly stock or 750 CFM if you have a performance camshaft and are looking for some extra wide open power.

The 1955 Olds originally came with Carter AFB or Rochester AFB four barrel carburetors and the Edelbrock 1406 will have a larger base requiring the use of an adapter number 1351935 and it includes the hardware and gaskets.

How do I know which step up spring to use in my carb? stock 350 cu in, 700R4 Transmission

The Step-Up function, which moves the Metering Rod to the Power Mode, is controlled by the Step-Up Spring. The base calibration has a spring which “stages” rich at 5” Hg. If your vehicle has a mid-throttle driveability problem that is encountered as the throttle is gradually opened, but then goes away upon further opening, it may be possible to eliminate the lean spot by using a stronger Step-Up Spring. The available Step-Up Springs are listed in the following chart along with their respective “staging” point. It is best to select a new spring on the basis of vacuum readings, but in the absence of a gauge, try the strongest spring (highest vacuum rating) to see if the problem goes away. If the drive problem is cured by the strong spring, try the next weakest spring as well. If the strong one does not help, then the calibration problem is related to the A/F metering stage of either the Cruise or Power Modes. Use the Calibration Reference Chart to help select another combination. Spring Color Blue Yellow Orange Pink Plain Staging Vacuum 3" 4" 5" 7" 8" ("Hg) A complete set of these springs is available separately as Edelbrock part #1464. The carb comes with yellow spring and is the recommended starting point.
